- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADOLPHUS M. LA FOY, OF LITTLE FALLS, NEW JERSEY.
THlLL-SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,476, dated January 9, 1894.
Application flied July 2o, 1 893.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLPIIUS M. LA FOY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Little Falls, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Supports for Wagon- Thills; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this Specification.
The object of this invention is to prevent the galling ot' horses backs, and the invention consists in providing a Wagon or truck with an attachment at each side whereby the thills are automaticallyheld at such an elevation as to entirely relieve the saddle from their weight, and thus avoid the friction and wear upon the animals back otherwise resulting therefrom.
Referring tothe accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the figures where they occur, Figure l. represents, in plan, a portion of one side of a wagon or truck and a thill connected therewith and having my improvement attached thereto. Fig. 2. is a section taken on the line Qc. of said Fig. ,1.
In said drawings, A. designates an ordinary front cross-bar of a wagon; B. one of the thills .and C the cross-bar connecting the pair of thills together.
D. designates an iron plate which is firmly secured to the bottom of said thills, and bar, if necessary or desirable, the free end o`f which is inserted through a loop or support, E, and engages with a bar or plate, f, secured beneath the front cross-bar A, by means of the clips, g, the effect of which is to hold the thills in an approximately horizontal positlon, as will be understood upon reference to Fig. 2. The elevation of Vthe thills may be increased or diminished by means of bolts h and nuts i, as indicated in the same figure. Said supports, E, are composed, in the present instance of a stout wire or rod of tempered steel formed into a loop at the front and into coils, j, at the central portion to eifect a spring action to the Serial No. 481,076. (No model.)
support, the rear extremities of the latter bearing against a clip-plate, F, which is secured beneath the front cross-bar, aforesaid by the said clips g, at each side of the wagon, as will vbe understood. Between said plate F and the bar f, the loop or support, E, is firmly clamped and held in position by means of the clips, g, and nuts g', as will be understood upon reference to said Fig. 2. Said plate F. is provided with slots or elongated openings 7e and Z, so as to permit of a certain degree of adjustment of the clips to lit bars and supports of different sizes, as will be understood.
The plates, B', by which the thills are secured to the wagon, instead of being made separately, as they are shown to be, may be made integral with the plates D, if desired. The coils j. may also be dispensed with if desired, and the projecting plates or arms D. may be so arranged as that their rear extremities will engage with the bottom of the crossbar A, or with a plate thereon', instead of the bar, f, and the latter be dispensed with, if desired, and a suitable clip-plate be substituted therefor, as will be understood.
It will be observed that a plate or band, E', is secured upon the supports, E, to serve as a bearing for the ends of the bolts or screws, h, so that as the nuts,4z`, are screwed farther on the bolts the outer ends of the supports will be forced downward, and vice versa, thus lowering or 'raising the thills, the normal pressure ot' the springs being to force the said ends upward, as will be understood.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The combination with the bar, A, and the thills, B, of plates, F, loops or supports, E, and means for securing said plates and supports to said cross-bar; and plates or arms, D, irmly secured to the thills and adapted to engage with said support and beneath said cross-bar, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of July, 1893. l
ADOLPHUS M. LAA FOY. Witnesses:
