To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, JOSEPH A. INGALLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evanston,in the county ofUinta and State of Viryoming, have invented a new and useful Bench- Vise, of which the'following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in bench-vses and it has for its object to provide a simple device capable of angular and rotary adjustment for the convenience of the Workman, the parts of the same being so connected as to enable them to be readily detached and connected for the purpose of repairing, &c.
A further object of my invention is to provide a vise in which the parts are so connected and combined as to prevent the accumulation between co-acting sufaces of dust and other foreign material.
Further objects and advantages of my inventicn will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out 'in the appended claims.
In the drawings-Figure l is a perspective view of the vise embodying my improvements.

Referring by numerals to the drawings, 1 designates the body portion of my improved vise, such body portion comprising the divided yoke 2, which is provided with a cylindrical bore 3, and ahorizontal integral disk 4t. The free edges of the divided yoke are provided with ears 5 and 6 which are connected for the purpose of contracting and ei'rpanding the yoke by a binding screw 7 provided with handle 8. l
9 represents a circular base plate which is adapted to rest upon the bench 10, a portion of which is shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, such base plate being provided with a peripheral upstanding flange 11, within which the disk 4 fits snugly. The body portion ofthe vise is provided with a central depending screwthreaded stein 12 which is screwed in a vertical perforation 13, formed in the center of the disk 4, and projects downwardly through the registering perforation llt in the center of the base, and is engaged beneath the bench by a nut or other securing device 15.
Fitting rotatably in the cylindrical-bored yoke is a sleeve 16, and integral with the front end of this sleeve is the inner jaw 17. This sleeve projects rearwardly beyond the end of the yoke and is tted with the clamping-ring 18, which `is provided withscrews 19 engaging tapped perforations in opposite sides of the sleeve. This ring bears against rear end of the yoke and the shoulder 20, which is adjacentto the jaw 17, bears against the front end of said yoke, whereby the sleeve is capable of rotary motion and is held from longitudinal play. Proj ectiug forwardly from the front side of the jaw 17 is an upwardly concaved lip 2l, whose function will be hereinafter explained;
The outer jaw 22 is provided with an integral tubular guide 23 which fits slidably in the above described sleeve and is provided at its front end with a bushing 24, in which is rotatably mounted the adjusting'screw 25. This adjusting screw is provided with a smooth portion 26 to tit in the said bushing, and is also provided at the front end of said smooth portion with a shoulder 27, to bear against the front end of the tubular guide,
and at the rear end of said smooth portion'4 with an annular groove 28 which is engaged by the inner end -of a retaining screw 29, which is fitted into the threaded perforations 30 in the side of the tubular guide and projects into the bore of the latter. The shoulder at one' end of the smooth portion of the adjusting screw, and the retaining screw engaging the groove at the opposite end of said smooth portion enable the adjustingscrew to rotate freely,prevent longitudinal movement thereof, and also enable the screw to be disconnected and removed from the vise by loosening said retaining screw.
31 represents a stationary nut which is arranged axially in the sleeve 16, being held in place by the screws 32 which are inserted 9 through perforations 33 in the wall of the 5 sleeve and engage registering. sockets 34 in the web 35, with which said stationary nntis provided.
The tubular guide of the outer jaw is pro- IOO vided with the longitudinal slot 36 of sufficient width to receive the web 35 of the stationary nut to enable said guide to slide freely in the sleeve and prevent rotary movement in the same,whereby said web forms a guide to prevent independent rotation of the outer jaw. The adjusting screw 25 engages the threaded bore of the stationary nut to enabley the outer jaw to be longitudinally adjusted. The forward extending lip 21 is designed to cover the front end of the slot in the tubular guide, when the outer jaw is extended or removed from the inner jaw, in order to exclude dust and dirt, especial-ly liable to enter said slot when the jaws are reversed.
From the above description it will be understood that the jaws are capable of angular adjustment through an arc of three hundred and sixty degrees, and they may be locked at any desired adjustment by means of the binding screw with which the divided yoke is provided. The body portion of the vise is also capable of rotary adjustment upon the base and may be locked in any desired position by means of the nut which is threaded upon the lower end of the depending stem. I also provide a locking pin 37. which is A adapted to engage a vertical perforation 38 in the disk 4 and the registering socket 39 in the base, as shown in Fig. 3.
It will be observed that the members comprising myimproved vise are readily detachable, such detachment necessitating only the removal of the clamping-ring and the retaining screw, and furthermore, said members are so fitted together, the joints being covered by shoulders, che., as described', as to effectively exclude dust and prevent the unnecessary Wearing of the contacting surfaces.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a bench vise, the combination with a body portion having a divided yoke and binding-screw, of a sleeve rotatably fitted in said yoke and provided at its front end with a shoulder to engage the front end of the yoke, a removable clamping-ring detachably secured to the rear end of the sleeve to engage the opposite end of said yoke, the inner jaw carried by said sleeve, a tubular guide slidably fitted in said sleeve and carrying the outer jaw, and means to operate said guide, substantially as specified.
2. In a bench vise, the combination with a body portion havingfa yoke, of a sleeve rota`t ably fitted in said yoke and carrying the inner jaw, means to clampsaid sleevein place, a fixed nut arranged axially inthe sleeve, a tubular guide fitting slidably in the sleeve and provided with a longitudinal slot to receive the Web of said fixed nut, the outer jaw being carried by this guide, an adjusting-screw rotatably mounted in the tubular guide and engaging said nut, and a forwardly-extending lip projecting from the front end of the sleeve in contact with the surface, of the tubular guide to cover and conceal the slot in the latter, substantially as specified.
3. In a bench vise, the combination with a body portion having a yoke, of a jaw-carrying sleeve rotatably fitted in said yoke and provided with an axial xed nut, a jaw-bearing tubular guide fittingslidably in said sleeve and provided'at itsfront end with a bushing, an adj usting-screw rotatably mounted in said bushing and engaging the fixed nut said adjusting-screw being provided near' its front end with a smooth portion to fit in said bushing, a shoulder to bear against the outer'side of the bushing, and an annular groove adjacent to the inner side of the same, and a retaining-screw carried by and fitting in a threaded perforation in the guide and engaging said annular groove in the adjusting-4 screw to prevent longitudinal movement of the latterand enable the same to be detached, substantially as specified.
