ALFRED BLACKWELL, OF BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOSEPH SAMUEL TAYLOR, OF SAME PLACE.
MEANS FOR ADJUSTING THE DRIVING-CHAINS 0F SAFETY-BICYCLES, TRICYCLES, OR OTHER VELOCIPEDES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,357, dated January 9, 1894.
Application filed March 9, 1893. Serial No. 465,261. (No model.) Patented in England February 12. 1892, No. 2,766.
To all whom it-may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED BLAcKWELL, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Warwick, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Adjusting the Driving0hains of Safety-Bicycles, Tricycles, or other Velocipedes, of which the following is a specification.
A patent for this invention has been gran ted il Great Britain, No. 2,766, dated February 12, 1 92.
This invention consists of the hereinafter described improved means for adjusting the tension of the endless driving chains of safety bicycles, tricycles or other velocipedes.

The fork or frame G, G, is of the ordinary construction with the exception that it has a bearing at E in which the lever D is pivoted. This lever carries the bearingA for the wheel hub B and it has an arm D rigidly connected thereto and extending laterally from'the lever at an angle thereto. It overlies a toothed sector L and carries a spring click K to engage the teeth Z of said sector which sector is fixed to the side of the fork. It will be understood that this arrangement of lever and sector is duplicated on the other side of the machine and it will be seen that by turning the lever on its pivot the chain O may be adjusted and the lever will be held in any adjusted position by means of the click engaging the toothed sector.
I claim In combination, the frame, the wheel, the lever pivoted to the frame and having the wheel journaled therein,said leverhaving an arm D rigidly connected thereto and extending laterally from the lever at an angle thereto, the curved sector L of the frame over which the arm D moves and means carried by the free ends of the arm and adapted to detachably engage the sector for adj ustably securing the said arm to said part, substantially as described.
