GAS HEATING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 512,132, dated January 2, 1894. Application filed April 5, 1893. Serial ll'o. 69,137. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, JAMES W. UNDERWOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sheridan, in the county of Hamilton andState of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas Heating Apparatus;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description'of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a partof this specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in heating apparatuses such as are employed for heating rooms in lieu of coal or gas stoves, and its object is to provide an apparatus of this character which shall be of a simple and inexpensive construction, and one which may be conveniently and safely operated and which shall not be an obstruction to the free use of the room to be heated, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will be carefully defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through the floor of the room which it is desired to heat by my improved apparatus, the heater being seen in elevation injposition for use, and Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the device in section. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device. Fig. 4 is a detail view which will be referred to hereinafter.
In the views X represents the floor of the room, which is provided with an aperture 00, havinga suitable curb about its edge to which is hinged at one side, a register Y of openwork cast iron such as is usually provided for furnace heating fiues. This register is shown in Fig. 2 as raised on its hinges to a substantially vertical position.

B is an elbow pipe passing through an opening in the wall Z into the flue .2, and having its vertical branch within the casing A, which it enters near the lower end thereof. Braces or stays of any suitable kind are provided for holding pipe B in its vertical position as seen in the drawings. The gas supply pipe 0 enters the casing A also near the lower end thereof but at the side opposite to the pipe B. A valve 0 is provided in the gas supply pipe outside the casing and a vertical rod 0' is provided for turning said valve the upper end of said rod passing through the floor adjacent to the register Y and being provided with a handle as clearly seen. Within the casing A the gas pipe 0 is also bent up ver tic-ally and is provided at its extremity with aburner O of fire-clay or other durable material.

E is a transverse brace or strut arrange midway of the chamber formed by arm d through which passes a vertical burner tube bearing a burner O of fire-clay or other suitable kind. This burner tubeF extends down through the'closed bottom of the arm 01 and incloses the vertical branch of the gas supply pipe 0, than which it is slightly larger in diameter so that an annular aperture is provided at its lower end for the entrance of air to the burner to support combustion of the gas escaping at the tip of pipe 0.
At about the center of the upper surface of the horizontal portion 61 of the combustion chamber D is provided a ring or loop 9 adapted to receive a hook on the lower end of an operating rod G seen in detail in Fig. 4, by means of which the chamber D may be raised or lowered, the Vertical arms d, 61 thereof f provided in the outer side of the arm d of chamberl) maybe opened and the gas may be lighted at theburner O.'-
