CHARLES F. MARKLEY, OF HOPKINS, MISSOURI.
NAIL- SET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,119, dated January 2, 1894.
Application filed. August 5 1893.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. MARKLEY, residing at Hopkins, in the county of Nodaway and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Nail-Set,of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive nail set, which can be conveniently carried in the hand, without interfering with the free use of such, which can be readily distinguished from the nails when carried in the nail pocket, which cannot slip through a small hole in the pocket through which nails or the ordinary sets can slip, and which can be quickly and effectively used for its desired purpose.
It has also for its object to provide an implement of this kind formed with a plurality of sets of different sizes, whereby it can be readily used for setting large nails, as well as small finished nails or brads, without the necessity of removing it from the hand.
The invention consists in a nail set constructed in the manner hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claims,
reference being bad to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a view illustrating my improved nail set as in position for use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same and Fig. 3 illustrates the manner in which the set is carried on the hand, when not in use.
In its practical construction my nail set is formed of a single member of a shape substantially as shown in Fig. 2 and comprises a main or body portion A, centrally apertured as at a. This body portion it will be observed has extensions B B at its opposite edges, which project in opposite directions and form the punches or set members proper, one of which 13 is much smaller than the other B, whereby such set is adapted to operate on large nails or small finished nails or brads, the faces of such punches being serrated, to the more firmly set on the nail heads. These punches B B terminate in short extensions 13 B which form the impact or hammer faces. It will also be noticed by reference to Fig. 2 that between the long stem of one set or punch member and the short arm of the other set or punch member, are formed semi-circular like seats or depressions for a purpose presently explained.
My improved set is clearly illustrated in Serial No. 482,418. (No model.)
Fig. 1 by reference to which it will be seen that when the large set B is to be used the index middle and third fingers are passed across the set B on one face, while the ball of the thumb presses on the central aperture 011 the other face. When not in use the set can be held out of the way by passing the third finger through the central aperture, and the second and little fingers fitted in the seats 0 G. This leaves the thumb and fingers free to be manipulated and used for the ordinary purposes.
When it is necessary to keep the device temporarily out of use, the user places the third finger through the aperture a as shown in Fig. 3, which leaves the hand entirely free for its ordinary uses.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A nail set having a laterally projecting apertured member, whereby it is adapted to be fitted on the thumb or finger, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A nail set formed of a body portion having a pair of sets or punches, one at each end, said punches projected in reverse directions, substantiallyas shown and described.
3. A nail set consisting of a centrally apertured body having oppositely projecting punch or set members at its outer edges, as and for the purpose set forth.
4:. A nail set, consisting of a body portion having punch or set members projected from diagonally opposite edges in opposite directions, said members terminating at the opposite diagonal corners of the body in short impact members, substantially as specified.
5. A nail set consisting of a centrally apertured body, having punch members projected in reverse directions from the opposite diagonal corners, and short impact members projected from the alternate opposite corners of the body, to form the upper ends of the punch members, and depressions or finger seats at the ends of the body between the impact end of one set and the punch end of the other set, all arranged substantially as shown and for the purpose described.
