GLASS-CRIMPING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,078, dated January 2, 1894.
Application filed May 29, 1893- Serial No. 475,928. (No model.)
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. WILKIN- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Glass-Crimping lWIachines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to construct a machine for crimping glass shades, so that it can be cheaply made, and can be readily altered to form shades of different sizes. This object I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a sectional elevation of my improved shade forming machine. Fig. 2, is a plan view. Fig. 3, is a detached View showin g the method of clamping the pivoting wire to the frame. Fig. 4, is a detached perspective view of one of the fixed blades. Fig. 5, is a detached perspective view of one of the movable blades. Fig. 6, is a detached sectional view of one of the heads for crimping gas globes. Fig. 7, is a view of a head used in crimping electric fixture globes; and Fig. 8, is a view of a crimped globe.
A is the base of the machine in which is mounted a central post B. On this post is a fixed frame D secured to the post by a pin b, in the present instance.
Sliding between the fixed frameD and the base, and mounted on the post is a vertically movable frame F.
Screwed into a threaded opening I) in the post is a screw bolt 19 and on the bolt is a washer b On the post is a head F, and clamped between this head F and the frame D by the bolt 19 are the fixed blades G, shown clearly in the perspective view Fig. 4. The upper portion of each blade is notched at g, and into these notches projects the corner of the head F, as shown in Fig. 1. The head has a series of notches f in which the blades G rest, so as to lock them in position.
In the fixed frame D is a series of radial slots d,in which rest the base portions of the blades G. The base of each blade G has a series of notches g, so that the blades can be adjusted upon the wire or rod 1', either toward or from the center to regulate the depth of the crimp. I prefer to cut or otherwise form an annular groove near the outer edge of the fixed frame D, and confine in this groove an annular pivot rod z'by means of a series of set screws 2", as shown in Fig. 3. Alternating with the radial grooves 02 is a series of radial grooves 02, in which are mounted the pivoted movable blades H, the rod i being the pivot for these blades as well as the rest for the blades G. The short arm h of the movable blade is curved, and has a slot h, as shown, and resting in this slot is a pivot rod k, secured to the sliding frame F. This pivot is is preferably made of an annular rod or wire inserted in an annular groove in the frame E, in the same manner as the pivot rod *5 and the frame E has a series of annular slots 8, which receive the short arms h of the blades H. When the frame E is raised the long arms of the blades I-I move in between the fixed blades G, and if the glass shade blank is resting upon the fixed blades, the movable blades will draw the glass into the space between the fixed blades crimping the glass shade in the manner shown in Fig. 8. By simply unscrewing the bolt 19 the head F can be removed and a head of larger or smaller diameter can be inserted in its place. For instance, the head shown in Fig. 6 is somewhat smaller than the head shown in Fig. l, and the head shown in Fig. 7 is very small. and is intended for use in making incandescent lamp shades where the neck is Very narrow. In the present instance, I use a lever M, having a movable fulcrum m, and pivoted to the hub E of the movable frame E by means of pivot pins m. The lever is yoked so as to pass on each side of the hub, as clearly shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and on each fork of the lever is a roller m adapted to travel in a way a on the base A. The lever has an extended portion M, which can be adjusted and set by a set screw m to any position desired. By pressing down upon the lever M the frame will be raised. At the same time the fulcrum of the lever will move toward the post.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination in a glass crimping machine, of the frame, fixed blades thereon, movable blades pivoted to said frame, each pivoted blade having a curved slot therein, pins adapted to said slots, and a movable Ice frame carrying said pin or pins, and mechanism for moving the said frame so that the pivoted blades will be moved positively toward and from the fixed blades, substantially as set forth. v
2. The combination of the post, a fixed frame mounted thereon, fixed bades mounted between the fixed frame and the head, said a head being removable so that different diameters of heads can be used, with movable blades alternating with the fixed blades, and pivoted to the fixed frame, a movable. frame controlling the movement of the movable blades, with a lever for moving said fixed frame, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the post, the fixed frame secured thereto, the head, a bolt securs ing the head to the post, stationary blades and pivoted blades alternating with the sta tionary blades, said stationary blades having notches at their upper ends to receive the head and having a series of notches at the lower end for adjustment, substantially as described.
4. The combination of the post, the fixed frame secured thereto, and an annular groove in said fixed frame, an annular pivot rod secured in said groove and the fixed blades mounted on said rod, and the movable blades also, mounted on the rod, with means for moving said movable blades, substantially as de scribed.
5. The combination of the post, the fixed frame, the head, annular groove in the fixed frame, an annular pivot rod in said groove, screwsfor confining therod to the frame, notchedhead, blades adapted to rest upon the piv'oted'rod and confined by the head, and movable blades pivoted to said rod, with a movable frame, an annular pivot'rod'on said movableframe adapted to a 'slotfineal'ch movable blade, with means for op'er'ati ng' said movable frame, substantially as described;
