HEEL-NAILING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,951, dated January 2, 1894.
Application filed May 12, 1891. Serial No. 392,454. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GHARLEs S. HILL, of Boston, and WILLIAM E. BAILEY, of Beverly, Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Methods of and Mechanism for Attaching Heels to Boots, of which the following is a specification.
The invention consists in combinations of mechanism and details of construction, as hereinafter set forth, by which the finish nails or slugs in a boot heel are driven simultaneously with the spanking of the top lift.
In carrying out our invention, We have perforated the spanker plate with holes corresponding to the position of said finish or other outside nails in the completed boot and provided the nail block with a corresponding set of drivers of sufficient length to pass through the said holes in the spanker plate, at the same time giving to the driver plate a limited horizontal motion in addition to its vertical motion beneath the nail block, and furnishing it with a set of inclined'recesses into which the ends of the long drivers for the said finish or other outside nails may drop when the driver plate is in position (see Fig. 2) to operate the shorter drivers that the latter may give their blows as previously described to the nails projecting from the heel body. When the driver plate ascends for this last mentioned purpose it carries with it the longer drivers, but since their heads are in the said recesses the said long drivers are not carried up far enough to do any harm.
In the operation of the machine as improvedby us when the driver plate ascends to operate the shorter drivers it has been swung a little to one side, its general fiat surface permitting it readily to pass under the heads of the short drivers, while the long drivers enter the inclined recesses. We have also given to the spanker plate a vertical motion in addition to the horizontal motion it had in the machine before the improvement was made; and in the further operation of the improved machine after the jack has been raised carrying with it the boot and attached heel body upon which the top lift is to be blind-nailed, the spanker plate,
which thus far has been raised to its highest position and swung to one side, is now swung back and lowered into contaot-with the nail block, its perforations coinciding with the perforations in the nail block containing the long drivers. A top lift with the finish or other outside nails sticking into it is now placed upon the spanker plate with the heads of the said nails in the said perforations before it is swung back to its last named position. The driver plate is also swung back to its original position under the nail block, thus bringing the heads of the long drivers out of the inclined recesses so that they rest upon the top surface of the driver plate, and the'jack with the boot and heel body being now brought over the top lift, the driver plate is caused to ascend with sufficient force to drive the finish.

B is the nail block supported upon a post P dropping into the die bed spindle. A spring (not shown) within the die bed spindle beneath post P tends to keep the nail block elevated above the driver plate D hereinafter to be described.
The nail block B for convenience is made in two parts in and u, but so far as this invention is concerned might be in one piece.
T is the spanker or top lift plate supported by a vertical spindle a, to which it is rigidly attached and which turns in a hole It extending through a projection 19 from a corner of the nail block. As shown, the projection is actually from the lower portion mof the nail block. If the nail block were made in one piece it would be necessary to cut away the upper portion above the projection 12 in order to give room for two half collars c and c hereinafter described. The spindle a has a vertical movement in the said hole It, and this vertical movement with the turning of the spindle a in said hole it gives to the spanker plate T a vertical as well as a horizontal movement with reference to the nail block.
L is a bent lever pivoted to the nail block at p, with the free end of its long arm bearing upon the lower surface of the spanker plate near the spindle a.
L is a lever pivoted. to the nail block atp, one end of which bears upon the short arm of lever L, while the other end is furnished with a thumb-piece as shown. By pressing upward on the said thumb-piece the two levers L and L are operated to raise the spanker plate from the nail block and with it the spindle a. This spindle a near its top has a rigidly attached half collar 0, which when the spindle is raised just clears another half collar 0 rigidly attached to the projection Z) of the nail block. After the spanker plate and spindle are lifted as described the spanker plate may be swung to one side, the collar 0 resting upon the collar 0', as shown in Fig. 2. A spring 8 attached to a pin 19 on -the spanker plate and to a pin 19 in the nail block tends to swing the spanker plate to the position shown at Fig. 5. A spring 8 within the hole It pressing against a shoulder on spindle 0! form ed by enlarging the diameter of said spindle throughout its lower portion, tends to lower the spindle and the spanker plate.
G is a long cog or gear secured to a sleeve E by a friction washer to and nut or collar 0 as shown, the said sleeve E being in turn keyed to spindle a. For additional support the said sleeve E has a flange at its upper end which rests or bears upon two brackets g and g pinned to projection 19.
D is the driver plate having a vertical, and,
movement relatively to the nail block, to which itis secured by post P passing through a hole 71. in said driver plate, and post P which extends upward froma sliding attachment (R) to the die bed spindle, (an adjusting device in the machine proper for different sized heels,) passes through a curved slot tin the driver plate, and finally enters the nail block, as shown; and cl, d, d, &c., are the nail drivers whose heads rest on the top of the driver plate, while their other ends penetrate into holes Z, Z, Z, &c., that extend through the nail block. v
The driver plate D at one corner is furnished with teeth, as shown, with which the cog G engages at any vertical position of the driver plate; and accordingly the driver plate as well as the spanker plat-e T, turns with the spindle a, but the movement of the driver plate in either direction is limited by the slot tand post P the cog G, during the continued movement of the spanker plate, slipping on the sleeve E. The driver plate has upon its upper surface three inclined recesses t t Z into which the heads of three slug drivers (1 d d, or drivers for the finish nails, fall when the driver plate is swung to the position for nail block B. The spanker plate T has three corresponding holes Z Z Z which, when the spanker plate is swung back, as before described, and dropped into position for spanking the top lift upon the nails projecting from the heel body, coincide with the holes Z Z Z in the nail block. At the same time the driver plate is swung back, the three drivers 11 d d rising from their inclined recesses 15 t If, so that their heads lie upon the flat surface of the driver plate. nails or slugs being now in the holes Z Z Z of the spanker plate may now be driven at the same time that the top lift is spanked upon the nails projecting from the heel body.
We claim as our joint invention 1. In a heeling machine, the combination with the nail block provided with holes for drivers, and drivers in said holes, of a driver plate having a lateral as well as a vertical movement on one face of said nail block and provided with inclined recesses to receive the heads of a portion of said drivers, and a spanker plate having both a vertical and a lateral movement over the other face of said nail block, and provided with perforations corresponding to the drivers whose heads onter said recesses in said driver plate, substantially as described.
