0. A. STEMPEL.
. FIRE EXTINGUISHER.
No. 511,469 Patented Dec. 26, 1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OMAR 'A. STEMPEL, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
FIRE-EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 511,469, dated December 26, 1893.
Application filed December 15, 1892. Serial No, 455,303. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OMAR A. STEMPEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Fire-Extinguisher, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to chemical fire extinguishers, of the variety operated by an efier- Vescing gas, created by mixing a strong acid, with a soda solution.
The object of my present invention is first, to provide a strong, safe and'durable chemical fire extinguisher, and second, to construct a chemical fire extinguisher, capable of automatic and instant operation when required for service.
To enable'others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure I. is a perspective view of my improved fire-extinguisher, Fig. II. is a vertical section of the extinguisher, showing the outlet, the screen, the acid vessel in position, the manner of securing the cover to the main tank of the extinguisher, and'the drop weight resting at the base of the main tank.
Similar letters indicate similar throughout the drawings.
A represents my improved chemical fire extinguisher, comprising the main tank B, having the spherical base 0, the cover D, screen E, acid vessel F, drop-weight G, out-let hole H, hose I and nozzle J as arranged in position for use. The spherical base 0 is so constructed, for the purpose of retaining the dropweight G without danger of breaking the acid vessel F, in the event the extinguisher should be laid upon its side, or tipped to an angle of forty-five degrees, for storing or in transit. It being understood, however, that in the nature of chemical fire extinguishers, instant operation is effected by mixing the acid from the smaller Vessel withthe soda solution in the main-tank. Hence, the object of the dropweight G normally contained in the spherical base 0 of the main tank B, is to fall upon and crush through the acid vessel F when the extinguisher is tipped to an angle of seventyfive degrees, or entirely inverted, and thus automatically bring the extinguisher into instant operation. The drop-weight G in this instance consists of a ball of suflicient weight parts to break the acid vessel F under the conditions above described.v Although, any suitably shaped weight of any serviceable metal may be used for this'purpose.
The acid vessel F is of glass, round in shape having thin fiat sides, and so constructed, as to rest loosely upon rims, or shoulders formed in the main-tank B and cover O in the position shown in Fig. II.
The cover D is provided with a screen E of wire-cloth, perforated metal, or any other suitable material, extending entirely across it, and located between the outlet-hole K and the acid vessel F as shown in Fig. II, for the purpose of keeping the outlet-hole free and clear of glass or similar accumulations or obstructions. I g
The cover D is secured to .the main-tank B by means of the male and female screw threads L. L. The cover, when screwed home, rests upon a rubber, or other suitable packing band M.
My improved extinguisher may be equipped with a suitable harness of proper material, made upon any of the plans commonly adopted for this purpose, for conveniently carrying the extinguisher while in use.
It will be observed that my improved extinguisher which can be cheaply constructed, is simple, strong and elfective.
Ido not lay broad claim in this application to my invention herein illustrated, as it is so claimed in my application, Serial No. 484,396, filed August 30, 1893.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A chemical fire extinguisher, comprising the cylindrical main-tank B, 'encircledat its top by the screw-thread L, and provided with a spherical base 0, arranged to receive and contain the weight G, the acid vessel-F, located between the top rim of the main-tank B, and the right-angled off-set in the cover D, the cover D, having the screw-threaded rim L, for securing it to the main-tank B, and provided with the screen E, located between the acid vessel F, and-the out-let hole, the connecting hose 1, and nozzle J, combined, applied and operating substantially as shown and described.
I OMAR A. STEMPEL. In presence of-- WM. H. OSMER, CHAS. GUNDLAOH.
