SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,437, dated December 26, 1893.
Application filed November 8, 1890, Serial No. 370,785. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TIMOTHY J. K1ELEY,ot the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in 5 Drain-Traps, of which the following is a full,
true, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improvement in drain traps, which are devices for allowing 1 the escape of water from the end of a steam pipe but closing against the following steam. The ordinary type of this class of trap is the well-known Nason trap.
My invention relates to animprovement in this class of devices, in which the operating parts are attached to one portion of the trap, from which another portion, or cover, may be readily removed. Likewise, by the construction of the present trap, I am enabled to increase the weight of the water in its operation on the escape valve by introducing a leverage effect between the operation of the water and its effect upon the valve:

The casing A may be provided with a support or supports D for bringing this casing in proper relation to the working parts, said casing being attached to the plate 0 by bolts E, as shown. The bucket B is pivoted to the lugs F forming part of the plate 0. The plate 0 is likewise provided with a tubular casting G, the shape of which can be readily understood from the accompanying drawings. Into the inner end of this casting G is screwed the vertical pipe H, open at its bottom, and provided at its upper end with a Valve seat. Within the pipe H the valve stem K operates, and is provided at its upper end with valve L and is'pivoted to the bucket at the lower end, asfat M,- while its upper end is guided in the spider frame N, shown clearly in Fig. 4. The operation of my apparatus can now be readily understood. Water enters through the inlet 0, falling into the bottom of the casing, and causes the float B to rise, thereby closing the valve L. As the water continues to enter the apparatus it will fall over the edge of the bucket, and finally cause the bucket to sink, thereby opening the valve L, whenthe force of the steam will cause the water in the bucket to pass up the pipeiH and escapeby the outlet, which will continue until the bucket is again floated, closing the of closing and openingthe valve L is greater than the flotation of the bucket, being increased by the well-known law of leverage; 1
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, in a drain'trap, with a vertical supporting plate having a pipe connection, of a hinged open float, a valve connected with the float and controlling the pipe, and an independent casing connected to said plate and removable therefrom without disturbing the connections or operating portions of the trap, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in a drain trap, of a vertical supporting plate having outlet pipe connections, with an open float hinged to the plate, a valve connected to said float and controlling the outlet pipe, and an independent casing connected to said plate and removable therefrom without disturbing the connections ICO or operating portions of the trap, substantially as described.
The combination, in a drain trap, of a vertical supporting plate having an outlet pipe connection and a by-pass valve, with an open float, a valve connected to said float and controlling the outlet pipe, the by-pass valve being arranged to be operated independent of the position of the outlet valve, substantially as described.
4. The combination in a drain trap with the plate 0, having an inlet port 0, and an outlet port P, and having connected thereto the hinged bucket B, the tubular casing G,
above the bucket, the pipe H, extending from the casing G, into the bucket of an outlet valve connected with the bucket, and a bypass valve arranged to permit steam to escape when the outlet valve is closed, substantially as described.
