ADJUSTABLE GUARD FOR EYEGLASSES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,261, dated December 19, 1893.

Be it known that we, ROBERT H. Ernest. and

' DON C. PHILLIPS, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Adjustable Guards for Eyeglasses; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, refcrence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specifica- Our invention relates to improvements in guards for eye-glasses, and the object of the improvementis to provide'a device of this class which shall be adjustable to fit difierent persons, and the device will be fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a pair of eye-glasses provided with our improved adjustable guard. Figs. 2, 3 and 4 show difierent forms of construction in detail, and on an enlarged scale. Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line 32-96, Fig. 3.

Similar reference characters indicating corresponding parts in these views, let the numeral 5'designate the eyeglass-frame to which the guard is attached by the screw 6. The bar 7 of the guard is provided with asegmental arm 7 which is slotted or apertnred to receive the fastening screw. This segmental arm may have any desired number of apertures, or the slot therein may be of any required length. The guard bar and the arm may be formed integral or in two parts, to be afterward connected in any suitable manner.

As shown in the drawings, the guard bar and the arm occupy different planes, the two bars extending inwardly toward each other,

while the arms are attached directly to the they may be attached, or with which they are formed integral as before stated. \Vedo not wish to limit ourselves to any exact shape for the arms 7. Three different styles are shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4t, and many others may undoubtedly be made which will answer the purpose equally well, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The use of our improved guard will be readily understood. By loosening the screw 6 in the form shown in Fig. at, the arm may be made to slide on the screw until the guard bar 7 occupies any desired angle with the plane of the frame, when by the tightening of the screw, the guard is held in the adjusted position. In the case of the apertured arms, the adjustment is the same except that the screw must be removed from one aperture and inserted in another. I

In the form shown in Fig. 3, the arm 7 con- .sists of a single wire held in place by a plate secured by the fastening screw. To adjust the guard in this form, it is only necessary to loosen the screw and move the arm to the desired position, after which the tightening of the screw maintains the arm in the desired place.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim is- The combination with the eye-glass frame of the adjustable guard consisting of the bar and the segmental arm apertured to receive the fastening screw, substantially as described.
