SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 510,867, dated December 12, 1893.

Be it known that I, SAMUEL N. LONG, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hermetically-Sealed Buckets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a device for hermetically sealing buckets employed for holding sirups, or other canned goods, which it is necessary to keep air tight, in order that the goods may not become deteriorated through the contact of air.
There is generally in receptacles containing canned goods, a total loss of the receptacle when the original contents have been removed, and it is the object of my invention to provide a package that is of utility after the package has been opened and the original contents have been removed, and to form a receptacle that is to all intents and purposes as serviceable for further use after the hermetical sealing is removed, as if it were originally produced for the secondary purpose for which it is intended.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the bucket formed with a top bead 2, and provided with a usual bail 3, connected to the bucket by ears 4. l

The device for hermetically sealing the vessel consists of la thin strip 8, preferably of tin, between which and the flange 6 is a strip 9 of packing to form a tight connection between the sealing strip and the llange. At its upper and lower edges, I secure the strip 8 by strips 10 of solder, the upper strip connecting the sealing strip, and the flange 7, and the lower strip connecting the sealing strip and the bead 2 of the bucket. One end of the sealing strip overlaps the other end, leaving a projecting portion, 11, which may be graspedby a suitable tool, for the purpose of removing the strip.
The sealing device is applied in the manufacture of the bucket, and I provide an opening 12 in the lid of the bucket, through which the goods to be preserved are inserted into the vessel, after which the opening is closed by a cap 13, secured by a strip 14, of sealing material. f
By my invention I Yprovide a vessel that is -admirably adapted for the preservation of canned goods, and which, when it h as been opened, leaves the' bucket in a very serviceable condition for future use, and without objectionable or unsightly projections on the vesselor lid.
I claim as my invention- In a hermetically sealed bucket, the combination with the bucket, ofa lid provided with a depending flange, said flange being adapted to but partially enter the bucket, a sealing strip surrounding said Bange and soldered to Athe bucket and lid, and a packing strip interposed between said sealing strip and depending flange; substantially as described.
