Beit known that we, FREDRICK C. LUETHI, a cltlzen of Switzerland, and JOHN M. E. RIEDEL, a citizen of the United States, both residing at Fort Wayne, in the county of Alvention, which will enable'others skilled-in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanylug drawings, which form part of this speciiication.

Our invention relates to improvements in adjustable feet for tables and other articles of f urniture, and its objects 'are to provide an improved adjustable foot which may be readily attached and easily adjusted in height so that the table shall be supported by all of its feet resting firmly on the i'loor howsoever uneven the iioor may be. We attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of our device with a caster attached. Fig. 2 is a side View of Fig. 1 with a foot knob attached instead of a caster. Fig. 3 is au end or top view of Fig. 2.

The essential features of ourinvention consist in the construction of a screw bolt 8 and a collar 9, both of which are provided with screw threads and are adapted to be screwed the one into the other, one of which is attached to the table leg, and the other is moved vertically by operating the screw; while thelowerI end 10 of the vertical moving part is adapted to be supported by a caster 11, or foot knob 12. Where it is desired to use the caster 11, the lower end 10 is extended so as to form a pin for the caster to revolve on. Where the foot knob 12 is desired, as in the case of billiard tables and other heavy articles, the knob 'is constructed integrally with the lower end 10 which is provided with faces, or formed in shape of a nut for the purpose of being operated by a wrench, For lighter articles, we

A thimble 17 adapted t0 receive and permit a vertical movement of the socket Sis provided with a fiange 18 adapted to fit in the upper recess 15. Where such flange 18 and recess 15 are made circular, a projection 19, Fig. A3, is attached to the ange 18 which engages a recess therefor in the plate 13 and thereby provides means to prevent the thimble 17 from turning, in case it should become loose or be ill fitted in the leg of the table. This thimble 17 is alsov .provided with a vertical slot 2O in which a pin 21 attached to the upper part of the screw bolt 8, moves vertically. The plate 13 holds the collar 9 in place without vertical movement by means of the recess 14 and flange 16 and when this collar is turned it operatesthe screw thread on the screw bolt 8, raising or lowering it vertically, until it accommodates or adjusts the bearing of the foot knob, or caster, as the case may be, to any unevenness of the iioor, whereby the table or article of furniture may be adjusted so 'that its upper surface may be held level and be rmly supported in such position by having all of its feet, or supports, resting rmly on the ioor. In this construction, the screw bolt 8 descends or ascends vertically during the operation of adjustment, without turning, being prevented by the pin 21, attached to its upper end, engaging the slot of the thimble 17 and thereby the collar 9 operates the screw thread exactly, and in using casters their movement on the ioor does not affect the adjustment because the screw bolt 8 is prevented from turning.
