' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 510,652, dated December 12, 1893.
Application filed October 14. 1892. Serial No. 448,872, (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHARLES'W. SHEDD, a cltizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Filling Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates toimprovements in can filling machines, and its object is to provide the same w1th certain new and useful features,
hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a central vertical section (on the line l1 of Fig. 2) of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a front elevation of the same and Fig. 3 a detail (in vertical section) of the salt feeder.
Like letters and numerals refer to like parts in all of the figures.
A represents the bed plate upon which are secured two parallel guides, or ways B B, having grooves B in which moves the slide 0, which slide vibrates beneath the vertical can chute, and moves the lowercan E forward a distance equal to its diameter, to the position of the can E, which latter can in turn moves the preceding can forward to the position of the can E ;-said cans being guided and kept in line by said ways B B.
D is the rear wall of the vertical can chute, which wall terminates above the table A at sufficient distance to permit the slide 0 to pass. D is the forward wall of said chute, which together with another parallel wall-D comprises the front and rear walls of asalt chamber, which chamber is closed at the bottom, and is sufficiently above the table to let the cans pass beneath the same. In the bottom of said chamber is an opening directly above the opening in the can E, and in said open= ing is the lower end of plunger K, which plunger fits said opening and is vertically movable therein. Said plunger K has a groove K in one side, terminating in an inclined plane at the lower end near the end of the plunger K. In this groove is a strip L which fills the same except a short distance at each end, and said strip is longitudinally adjustable and secured by a thumb nut and bolt L, whereby the chamber formed by the lower end of the groove K may be adjusted to contain more or less salt, which is placed around saidplunger K, and whichis broken up and caused tofall into said lower end of the'groove K, by a series of pins 0 on said plunger, which terminates in a stem M, which stem passes through a guide (not lettered), and around said stem is a spring which restores the plunger to the elevated position shown, after it has been depressed by the arm P. A hopper F is secured directly above the can E by bolts J passing through slots J J in the wall D". Said bolts also secure guidesI I in which is a vertically movable piston H, having attached a head H, which head moves vertically within the lower part of said hopper, and also passes downward within a cylindrical extension F at the lower end of said hopper which extension at itslower end terminates in a nozzle T'of reduced diameter to enter the opening in the top of the can E and is surrounded with a cylinder or casing F having an outwardly flanged lower end faced with, an elastic packing This casing and packing retains the air and surplusthat escapes around the nozzle T,-from whence they are conveyed away by a pipe U attached to and opening into said casing. An adjustable strainer F is provided near the bottom of the hopper F, consisting of a sheet metal piece fitted upon the surface of the hopper and adjustable -thereon, said sheet metal and the hopper having perforations that will coincide when the movable piece is adjustedin middle position, and which may be also partially or wholly opened by adjusting said piece of sheet metal. Beneath this strainer is a trough G. to receive the liquid passing through the o strainer, which liquid is conveyed away by the pipe U, attached to and opening into said trough G.
Beneath-the can E is a vertically movable piston V, having a roll Vprojecting from its lower side, and engaging a cam Xon the'driving shaft W. Said cam raises the piston V during the greater part of the revolution of the shaft and presses the can E" upward against the packing S while it is being filled by the descent of the piston H. Said shaft IV is j ournaled in suitable hangers 9, 9 beneath the table A and is provided at one side with a crank wheel 7 and at the other side with a crank bend W, to which cranks are connected rods R, which extend upward at each side of the machine and connect to the respective ends of a yoke Q through which passes the piston rod 11' provided with nuts H" at each side of said yoke to vertically adjust said piston therein.
To operate the slide 0 a rock shaft 2 is journaled in suitable hangers 5, 5, and provided with an arm 6 extending toward the driving shaft and provided with a roll 10 which engages a cam V adj ustably secured upon the side of the cam wheel X by means of a bolt Z passing through said wheel, and a curved slot Y in said cam. Another arm 6 extends upward from said rock shaft and is connected at its upper end to the slide C by means of the rod 8, having a series of holes whereby its working length may be adjusted, whereby the slide 0 will move farther forward and will place smaller cans in proper position and by adjusting the hopper and by moving the bolts J in the slots J cans of various heights may be filled.
At the rear of the yoke Q is an arm P, which passes through and traverses the verticalslot J" in the wall D" and prevents the turning upon its axis of the piston H. On this arm is adetachable extension P, which as it descends strikes stem M on the plunger K and depresses said plunger, which is again restored to place by the spring N surrounding said stem. By extending the yoke Q and crank shaft 7 and providing a wider can chute, salt chamber and two plungers and a widerlowerextension F, togetherwith a wider piston H, and wider ways B, the capacity of the machine may be doubled without duplicating the entire machine. If desirable the crank bend W may be replaced by a crank disk as at the other side, and both disks provided with crank pins in slotted openings whereby the stroke of the piston may be adjusted; in this case one or both ,of said disks may be provided with a cogged edge and the machine driven by a pinion engaging said cogs and suitably mounted on a driving shaft.
The operation of my device is as follows: At each revolution of the driving shaft the bottom can in the chute is moved forward, and the column of cans in the same move down, the can assuming the position shown in Fig. 1. The position of the parts is shown as at the end of this movement. The enlarged side of the cam wheel X now raises the forward can firmly against the packing S, with the nozzle T in the opening of the can where it is held during about three fourths of the revolution of the shaft W. The piston H at once rises above the bottom of the hopper F, allowing the contents of said hopper to fall into the cylindrical extension F". The piston then descends and forces said contents down into the can through the nozzle T. As the piston starts on its return stroke, the smaller part of the wheel X reaches the roll V and allows the piston V to descend to the position shown. VVhile the can is being filled the roll 10 traverses the cam Y to its smaller side, thus allowing the spring 4: to retract the slide 0 from beneath the cans in the chute. By its forward movement the lower can E is now thrust forward, moving the filled can out to the front of the table and placing the next can in position. In the meantime the middlecan of the lower series stops beneath the salt receptacle, and as the piston descends the arm P strikes the extension M and drives the plunger K down through the bottom discharging the salt in the lower end of the groove K into said can, these described noVemenis being repeated in succession. as long i as cans are applied to the chute and salt to the middle receptacle and materials to fill the cans to the hopper. To disconnect the salt feed, the extension P is removed from the arm P. The plunger K will then remain stationary.
What I claim is-- j 1. In combination with a hopper, extension, and vertically movable plunger, salt receptacle, a movable plunger in the same, having a chamber in its side and operated by said plunger, substantially as described.
2. In a can filling machine, having 11lovable plunger to fill the cans, a salt chamber and a movable plunger in the same, anctpassing through the bottom thereof, a grpove in the side of the plunger, and a strip filling a part of said groove and adjustable therein, and projection on said plunger, substantially as described. ,1 j

In a can filling machine in combination with a can filling mechanism, having avertically movable cross head having a plunger attached, an arm on said cross head,a detachable extension on said arm, a plunger engaged by said extension, a spring on said plunger, a chamber in the side of said plunger, a salt receptacle surrounding said plunger, and an opening in the bottom of said receptacle, through which said plunger passes, substantially as described. w p g, W

5. In a can filling machine, in combination with a can chute, a hopper, a plunger, and a slide to feed the cansfrom the chute to the for said cylinder and hopper, and bolts passing through said slots, whereby the device may be adjusted to cans of different heights, substantially as described.
7. In a can filling machine, in combination with a can chute, can filling mechanism, and
