STEAM OR OTHER VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 510,425, dated December 12, 1893.

Be it known that I, FRANK HEDLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam or other Valves, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to improvements in steam or other valves and has for its object to provide a valve in which one, two or more inlets are controlled by a single lever, the parts being of simple construction as will be hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the valve showing the inlets and outlets. Fig. 2isacentral vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the rocker valve employed for controlling the inlets and outlets, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the same, showing more clearly the diaphragm for separating the inlets. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the head of the valve.
A represents the valve proper; B the rocker valve employed for controlling the inlets and outlets; O the valve stem, and D the lever for operating the same.
As will be seen the shell or casing of the valve A is constructed with suitable inlet ports a and outlet ports b, one end 0 of the valve being cast integral with the casing, the other end (1 being removable, to enable the various parts to be inserted and adjusted.
The rocker valve is provided with a central squared opening e to admit of its adjustment on the stem 0, and to prevent said rocker valve from turning independently of said stem. The rocker valve is also provided with a circumferential diaphragm g at its center, the said diaphragm having a packing ring g, forming two complete and distinct compartments, and also serving to separate the two inlets a and outlets b from each other. A hearing it is formed in the end 0 of the valve to receive the end of the stem 0, and a recessed bearingi is formed in the end d of the valve, in which end is journaled the opposite end of the valve stem. A collar or disk j is provided on the stem and adapted to fit into said recess 1' to prevent leakage of steam or liquid at this point, thus dispensing with the ordinary packing which would be otherwise required. The outer end of the stem 0 is squared as at k to receive a lever D for controlling the valve B. The end d is provided with a screw thread which admits of adjustment tothe parts as theybecome Worn.
I do not wish to limit myself to the use of one diaphragm for separating the inlets, and dividing the valves into two compartments, as it is obvious that any number of diaphragms may be employed.
The operation is as follows: When the valve stands in the position shown in Fig. 2 the inlet and outlet ports are separated and closed, thus preventing entrance to and discharge from the valve. When the valve stands in the position shown in Fig. 6, and the lever is at an angle of about forty-five degrees, the rocker valve B will rest at a point between one of the inlet and outlet ports, when steam or liquid will be admitted to the valve through the ports a and discharged through the ports b.
Having now described my invention, I declare that what I claim is- A valve constructed of a suitable casing provided with two or more inlet and outlet ports, said inlet ports being opposite each other one end of the casing being cast integral therewith and the other end being removable therefrom, said ends being provided with suitable bearings to receive the ends of the valve stem, the said stem being squared between said hearings to correspond with the squared longitudinal openingin the rotating valve, the said valve being provided with one or more diaphragms or disks for dividing the valve proper into two or more separate and distinct compartments, substantially as set forth and illustrated.
