T. D. OLAPHAlVL APPARATUS POR PROPELLING BOATS. No. 510,117; Patent-ed neo; 5,1893;

NITED STATES PATENT rFrcEu THOMAS DUNNILL OLAPHAM, OF ASHURST, NElV ZEALAND.
APPARATUS FOR PROPELLING BOATS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 510,117, dated December 5, 1893.
Application filed October 8,1891.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, THOMAS DUNNILL OLAP; HAM, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Ashurst, in the provincial district of Wellington, in the Colony of New Zealand, have invented Improvements in Apparatus for Propelling Boats, of which the following is a specification.
The objects of my invention are to provide an apparatus whereby the action of the oars in rowing boats, and more especially in such as are used for saving life may be used for any suitable purpose such for instance as pumping air which can be made to pass out of the boat underneath the water through orifices, and thus pressing against the water in the opposite direction to that in which the boat is traveling may be made to assist in propelling the boat. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing which is a sectional view taken through the gunwale of an ordinary life boat.
Similar letters referto similar-parts throughout the view.
a is the gunwale of the boat.
7) is a plate firmly bolted inside the gunwale by the bolts b. I
c is aplate bolted to the top of the gunwale.
d is the rowlock.
e is a sliding block sliding freely in the guides e e.
ff are rubber packings to prevent concussion when the sliding block 6 reaches the end of its stroke in either direction.
g is the cylinder of an air pump having suction valve g and delivery valve 9 as fitted to an ordinary air pump.
g is the cap for removing the valves.
h is the piston of the airpump having a Serial No. 408,112. (No model.)
piston rod h fixed to the sliding block 6 by the cross head h 2' is the delivery pipe.
It will be seen from this description of the several parts and by reference to the drawing that my invention consists in attaching an air pump to an ordinary life or other boat in such a manner that with every stroke of the oar the slide block 6 is made to traverse in the slides e e carrying with it the piston h and thus actuating the air pump, and delivering air through the delivery pipe i for any suitable purpose such for instance as to provide a propelling jet of air acting against the water. This may be effected by simply turning the ends of the pipes c'as shown in dotted lines at w.
Having now described and particularly ascertained the nature of my invention, 1 declare that what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination, the slide 6, carrying the row lock, the cylinder g, having the valved inlet 9', and outlet g the pipe '6 connected with the said cylinder, the piston h and piston rod h, connected with the slide e, and the means for supporting all of said parts and guiding the slide e, consisting of the bar I), to which the cylinder with the pipe 1', is bolted and having the depending guide 6, for the slide, the said bar extending longitudinally along the under side of thegunwale and bolted thereto, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS DUNNILL OLAPHAM. Witnesses:
JAMES SPIERs FREEMAN, JOHN BEARD.
