,GAME/APPARATUS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.509,813, dated November 28, 1893.

.To a/ZZ whom t mayconcerm Be it known that I, HOWARD KNIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Game Apparatus; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the Iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in game apparatus or game wheels and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same whereby unauthorized persons are un-4 able to use the same.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional View of a game apparatus constructed according to my invention, on the line Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is asimilar view on the line y-y, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. 4t is a plan view of the grooved operating wheel. Fig. 5 is a view of the saine looking from the opposite side. Fig. 6 is a plan View of the registering wheel.

In the said drawings the reference numeral 1 designates a rectangular casing having a glass top 2, and is provided with aremovable drawer 3. Located Within this casin g is a vertical standard` or upright 4, having pivoted to its upper end a cog wheel 5, provided with a series of radial slots 6. The upper face of this Wheel is divided or partitioned off into a number of spaces 7, of contrasting colors, there being one space for each slot 6. Thereare also two or more slots in the glass top or cover which register with the slots `in thelwheeh Secured to the pivot of said cog wheel so as.- to rotate therewith is a wheel 8, having upon its upper face a series of beveled grooves 9, and a peripheral recess 10. These grooves are of peculiar form, Vforming as it were a'series of ratchet teeth 12. It `has also an enlarged groove 12a. Upon its underside the wheelS is provided with a series of pins 13, arranged in the arc of a circle, see Fig. 5, with which engages a toothed segment 14, pivoted to the standard 4, and secured to the pivot of this segment is a lever 15, provided with a spring I 16, at one end. The'opposite end of this lever f projects through an opening in the casing and :when depressed the segment is actuated or rotated.

The numeral 17 designates a cog Wheel, pivoted to the upper end of a standard 18, aud meshing with the cog wheel 5. This cog wheel is provided with a number of radial teeth 11'd on its upper side with which engages a stud or pin 171?l on the under side of a registering wheel`17'b. The upper face of this wheel 17b is divided into a number of equal spaces of contrasting colors, corresponding with the colors of the spaces on wheel 5. A hand or pointer 19 is fixed to the upper end of the upright or standard 18.

The game is played as follows: A number of disks of metal, celluloid or Vother suitable material are provided or given to each player. One of the players then inserts one of the .disks in one of the slots in the glass cover i which falls down through the slot into a registering slot in the wheel 5,'and engages in `one of the grooves in the wheel 8, abutting against the straight face of one of the teeth 12. `:The lever 15 is then suddenly depressed rotating the W11eel5, through the medium of the disk in the slot and also rotating -thecog `wheel 17, and the wheel 17b so that the hand 19, will point to one of the spaces on the said Wheel. These spaces are of different values which are determinednby the colors. For instance a red space counts one, a white space five, and a black space nothing. Of course these may-be varied,'and instead of the values being determined by colors they may be designatedby numbers., After the lever is released it will be returned to normal posiltion together with wheel 5, the disk slipping over the beveled portion of the groove and dropping into the enlarged groove 12a. The cog wheel 5, however does not return to normal but remains in the position in which it was turned by the segment .and {wheel S.` When Aanother disk is inserted'in vthe slots the operation will be repeated andthe Lrstdisk in- IOO serted will be brought into register with the peripheral recess 10, and will drop in'tojth'e drawer in the casing. When all the players have played in turn the person having made the highest count wins the game.

From the above it will be seen that no person 11n-provided with one of the disks can play the game, as when no disks are in slots the wheel 5, will not be actuated when wheel 8 is rotated, as the disk engaging in the slot and groove in said wheel provides the means whereby they will rotate.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination with the casin g, having a glass top with a series ot slots, a vertical standard, a cog wheel, pivoted to the standard, having a series oi" slots registering with thev slots in said top, the wheel also pivoted to said standard having a series of grooves in itsy upper side, an enlarged groove and a peripheral recess, and a series of teeth or pins on its under side, the cog wheel pivoted to a vertical standard having a'- series of radial teeth, the registering wheel and the-'hand or pointer, and means substantially as described for actuating said wheels.l e

The combination with the casing, having a glass top provided with a series of slots, a vertical standard, the cog Wheel pivoted to said standard having a series of radial slots registering with the slot-s in the top and with a series of spaces of contrasting colors, the wheel pivoted to the standard vhaving an enlarged groove, aseries of radial grooves forming ratchet teeth, a peripheral recess and a series of pins on its under side, of the toothed segment, the spring' actuated lever, the cog wheel meshing with said first mentioned cog wheel, having a series of radial teeth on its upper face, the wheel having a series'of spaces on its upper face representing different values and a stud or pin on its under side, and the hand or pointer, substantially as described.v
