SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,139, dated November 2.1, 1893.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, BRICE EDWIN RIKER, a resident of Branchville, in the county of Sussex and State of New Jersey, and ALEX- ANDER GREEN, a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stirrups; and We do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure lis a perspective view of our iinproved safety stirrup. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, showing some of the parts in section. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the safetyfork, with its removable and adjustable toeplate. Fig. lis a detail view of said toe-plate, removed from the fork; and Fig. 5 is a cross section on line in Fig. 2.

This invention has relation to safety stirrups, and our improvement consists in the novel construction and combination of parts of a stirrup of thattype as will be hereinafter more :fully described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, the letter A denotes the tubular stem or socket piece of the stirrup, shown at C, said stem being cast with a loop or eye,wB, at its upper end, for its attachment to the stirrup straps (not shown). The stem B has a central recess or socket,D, extending its entire length and preferably square in cross-section, as shown in Fig. 5, into which flts loosely the square shank E of stirrup C, said shank having on one side a notch or recess F. On that side of the stem or socket A facing the notched side of the square shank E is a hollow boss or offset G, forming a chamber or recess for the springlatch H, the stem or arm I of which projects out through an aperture in the end of the boss and is articulated to the upper end of a lever J of the first class, which has its fulcrurn in an arm or bearing, K, secured to and projecting laterally from the stem or socket A, in alignment with the boss Gr. The lower 5o end of the lever J, is formed with a central upwardly extending recess to receive the stem L of a foot plate M, and is provided with a thumb screw N, by which said stem may be vertically adjusted. The foot plate which is of the same general contour as the stirrup, may be made integral with fthe stem L, or it may be made separate, and the stem formed with two downwardly extendingcurved arms O, which engage with a groove P formed in 6o the convex edge of the plate. The plate in this instance is secured in place by means of countersunk screws Q. The lower edge of the plate is concaved, and we prefer to make it removable so that it can be replaced by others to accommodate different sizes of feet.
The operation will be readily understood. To engage the shank E withthe socket piece, the former is pushed up into the recess D, the upper end thereof striking the beveled end of 7o the latch H, pushing itfout and holding it in this' position until the notch F registers with said beveled end when thelatch will be forced into engagement therewith, securely connecting the stirrup and socketpiece together.
In case the rider is thrown from the saddle the forward part of the foot will strike the lower edge of the foot plate, pressing it in toward the stirrup and forcing the upper end of the lever outwardly, ydsengaging the latch 8o from the notch, and disconnecting the stirrup from the socket piece.
Having thus described ourinvention, what We claim isl. Thecombination with the stirrup having a shank, formed with a notch or recess, of the socket piece having a recess to receive said shank, the actuated' latch, the lever connected therewith, having a lrecess in its lower end, and a set screw, and the foot plate hav- 9o in g a vertically adjustable stem located in said recess, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination with the strrup having a shank formed with a notch or recess, of the`s0oket piece having a recess to receive said shank, the spring` actuated latch, the lever connected therewith having a recess in its lower end, the stem fitting insaid recess formed with curved arms, the removable foot piece embraced by said arm and the retaining screws, substantially as described.
