To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PRESTON W. LUPHER, a citizen of the United States, residingat Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Removable Oar- Fronts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved adjustable and removable front for street and other railway cars, and consists in certain details of construction, and combination of parts as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the front portion of an ordinary street railway car, provided with my improved detachable front which is construct ed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the improvement removed from the car.
To put my invention into practice with a street railway car 1 ofthe usual construction, I construct a frame 4 adapted to fill the space between the overhanging front of the roof 12, and the hand rail arranged about the front apron 2. Arranged about the lower edge of the frame'4 is a thin metallic sheet 5 flaring outwardly to correspond with the contour of by means of small bolts to the roof of the car, and by downward extensions of the said rods 9, entering sockets arranged in the platform, or by means of bolts passing through the apron 2. At each end of the plate 5 the same is provided with flanges 6 through which wood screws or bolts are passed into the frame of the car to further secure the front in position. This entire frame 4 is fitted with glass 7 to prevent the inrush of cold air or rain, and thereby afford protection to the motorman. or other person operating the car. the lights of glass 8, is mounted in aseparate frame and attached in position in the main frame 4 by means of hinges, in a'manner that the same may be opened which will be found useful for various purposes.

Having thus described my invention, what One of 7 I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patthe roof, the outwardly flaring plate 5 arranged at the base of the frame adapted to fit neatly about the apron 2 of the platform, and the means substantially as described for attaching the said guard in position, all arranged and combined for service, substantially as described.
