SWITCH FOR RAI LROAD-CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,837, dated November 14, 1893. Application filed January 26, 1893. Serial No. 45 9,1380% (No model.)
,ment,and operation, of devices for switching a car from one track to another by means of the car wheels themselves, as hereinafter more particularly described.
In the accompanying drawings Figure I is a top view of a mechanism embodying my improvement. Fig. II is a sideview thereof. Figs. III and 111* are views showing face of the wheel. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The letter A indicates a-rail road track "constructed with a switch tongue A pivoted at a in the usual manner where a car is to be swltched from one track to another, and the letter B represents a part of the body of the car which is supported upon wheels, the tread of the forward left or right hand wheel being of the form as shown at 0 (Figs. III and III*) to be hereinafter more particularly described.
The letter D indicates a casing or frame constructed of iron, wood or any other suitable material which is sunk in the ground as shown in dotted lines in Fig. I. Arranged in this casing D and to the inner sides of the track A. are pivoted thereto, as at b, levers E E which extend slightly above the level of the tracks Aand their forward ends C impinging against the lower portion of bell crank levers G G pivoted to lugs e .on the bottom of the casing D. The said levers E E are provided on the lowerrear portion with weights to keep a part of their upper portion above the track. To the upper end of the 7 bellcrank lever G is connected one end of the cross rod H which passes throughan opening on the under side of one of the tracks A, while to the other end of said rod H is connected the end of the switch tongue A by inserting the rod therein. The bell crank lever G is attached to the rod H near the end thereof, so that when the lever E or E is operated upon it actuates the bell crank levers G and will press the lever E which in turn act-uates the bell crank lever G which causes the switch tongue A to be shifted to the left and the car is switched to the right hand track, while if it is desired to shift or switch the cars to the left hand track the tread f of the forward left hand wheel of the car would be constructed as shown at C Fig. III which would press on the lever E near the left hand track and operate the switch tongue A by means of the bell crank levers G and G and rod H. If it is desired to switch the car a second time the tread of the ,yvheel C may be constructed with an additional bearing f. for that purpose as shown in Fig. 111*. I
By my arrangement the switch may be set by one car one way and by another car the other, by means of interior treads of the wheels and without being actuated either way by the carrying tread'of either wheel, thereby dispensing with the services of a man at each switch and doing away with the old style switches operated by the horses feet.
My invention is particularly'adapted for the use of electric street rail road cars that will operate the switches themselves instead of requiring the presence of a man at each switch, and moreover it can be used with equal advantage on'hors'e cars as well.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I In combination the rail A. the levers E. E
arranged in the casings alongside of the inner margins of the rails with a part projecting above the rails and their forward ends impinging against the bell crank levers G. G, and the cross bar H connecting the bell crank levers G G and the switchtongue, substantially as shown and described.
