PATENT Qrrrcn.
FERDINAND BARTELS, OFBERL IN, GERMANY.
MACHINE FOR SMOOTHING AND POLISHENGI PILE FABRICS.
$PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,802, dated November 14, 1893.
Application filed July 21, 1893.
To all whom it may concern.- 4
Be it known that 1,.FERDINAND BARTELS, of the firm of Bartels, Dierichs 82; 00., at Barmen and Berlin, a subject of the King of Prussia, residing at Berlin, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for Smoothing and Polishing Pile Fabrics, of which the following is a specification. The object of the invention is to smooth and polish the pile in plain or figured textures for the purpose of obtaining 'fur like trimming. This invention relates to an apparatus by which a trimming for dresses, cloaks and the like can be given the external appearance of natural fur, the trimming being cut in strips from a piece or supply or being woven in strips. A peculiarity of naturalfur is that the hairs are in lying position and possess considerable brilliancy or gloss, and the device illustrated in the drawings is used to smooth and polish the hairs formed by the pile'threads of the said trimming so that said threads will remain permanently smoothed or bent, said threads after weaving having. anupright or vertical position.
' In the annexed drawings Figure l is a side elevation partly in section of the apparatus. Fig.2 is a section along 'y y Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a block and cover. Fig. 4 isa front elevation of Fig. 3. The trimming strips 8 carryingthe pile f. are drawn through a longitudinal channel or gutter 9" formed by a groove in a piece of brass, bronze or other material and heated throughout its whole length to a certain temperature.
' channel, as before stated, is in the metallic block which latter is capable of absorbing a supply of heat, so that the heat generated by the gas burners g 9 can be regulated according to the nature of the material of the trimming and the character of the coloring Serial No. 481,119. (No model.)
and the heat will also be equally distributed along the entire length ofthe channel, The metallic block might be replaced by some other heat absorbingmedium as for example a sand bath. The temperature is indicated by a thermometer tset in the covering late, so that the size of the burner flames can be readily adjusted according to the heat to be obtained therefrom. Before being led into the channel the strip 8 passes over a fixed brush u against which it is pressed by a vertically movable or yielding pressure roller 20 so that loose fibers or the like clinging to the pile will be held back by the brush. In consequence of the pressure and the simultaneous action of the heat to which the pile is exposed for some time in the channel during the slow passage of the strip, said pile is thoroughly bent or smoothed and permanently retains its smoothed position and at the same time receives from this operation the glossy appearance of natural fur. The strip can be fed or drawn along in various ways. In the drawings are shown two feed rollers d d firmly pressed together. One of the rollers is actuated by a belt and pulley connection 70 is 10 receiving motion from shaft 0 by means of gears z 2'2 By changing the wheels 2 z z the speed of the strip can be regulated. Ac-
cording to the Width of block a one or more channels of the same or different cross section can be applied to or formed integral in the block and cover, and if necessary two or even three blocks are arranged behind one another, the channels of the succeeding blocks being narrowed, so that proportionately to the nar: rowing the pressure of'the pile is increased and the duration of theinfluence ofpressure and heat is extended, as required by the fabric and the stiffness of the pile.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device for smoothing and polishing pile fabrics, the combination of a heat-retaining and distributing block having a-longitudinal groove forming'a channel in one surface thereof, a cover-plate fastened directly to the channeled side of the'block and covering the channel therein, and means for heating the block, substantially as described.
2. In a device for smoothing-and polishing pile fabrics, the combination of a heat-retaining and distributing block, having a longitudinal groove forming a channel in one surface thereof, a cover-plate rigidly attached to the channeled surface of the block and covering the channel therein, and means for moving the pile fabric longitudinally through the channel in the block, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a heat-retaining and distributing block having a longitudinal groove forming a channel through which the pile to be smoothed and glossed is moved lon gitudinally in the direction of the length of the channel, a cover-plate rigidly attached to and carried by said block over said channel, a heater for heating the block,'and means for drawing the pile longitudinally of the channel, substantially as described.
4. The combination of a heat-retaining and distributing block having a longitudinal groove forming a channel through which the pile to be smoothed and glossed is moved lengthwise, a cover-plate secured in a position over said channel, mechanism for drawing the pile fabric in the direction of the length of the channel, a brush for acting on the pile, and a vertically yielding presser arranged to act upon the pile fabric to press it against the brush, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
FERDINAND BARTELS.
