SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 190.508,599, dated November 14, 1893.
Application filed February 16, 18925 Serial No. 421,782. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:`
Be it known that I, THOMAS CoeswnLL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented a new and useful Hoisting-Bucket or other Receptacle for Handling Coal, Ores, Fruits, &c.; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention `relates to a novel and useful opening and closing bucket bottom or other receptacle for handling coal, ores, fruits, dac., which is constructed of metal or other suitable material of any desired size o r form in two parts, hinged at the top edge, on both sides together, having a suitable handle, pivotally secured to hangers having rollers mounted therein in engagement with both sldes of the hinge plates for the purpose of handling and operating the bucket in openlng and closing the same when desired to release its contents.
The following description fully expl'ains the nature of my said invention, and the manner' in which I proceed to construct, apply and use the same.
Figure l is a perspective view of the bucket closed, showing all the parts in position for use. Fig. 2. is a perspective 'view ofthe hinge as secured to the top rim of abucket or basket having pulleys operating on same,'and the means for changing the positions of the pulleys in opening and closingthe receptacle. Fig. 4., is a plan view of the hinge as attached to buckets or receptacles constructed in two parts, for opening and closingthe bottom of same. The position shown represents the receptacle closed and the same carrying its contents. Fig. 3. represents the position of the bucket when open and allowing its contents to escape; also shows the position of the hinges and the extent traveled by the hangers or roller frames and their relative position, on the hinges in opening the bucket. Fig. 5. is a sectional view of the hinge and hangers or roller frames operating on same, When secured to the two sections of buckets and other receptacles, also showing the chain movably attached to the rim of bucket and secured to hangers or roller frames for operating the same in opening and closing the bucket.
The letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Referring to the several parts by letter, A indicates the bucket constructed in two parts M and N, of metal or other suitable material. Around the top edge of the two parts is formed and secured a metal band B, of suitablethickness and width, to which are secured the hinges C, at the top where the two Sections M N of the bucket, come together. On the plate or bar forming the hinge C is mounted aroller frame D, carrying the ypulleys E and F, the plate or bar forming the hinge O, extending sufficiently below and above the metal band B to allow of a track for the pulleys E and F to travel Without interfering with the metal band B. To keep the pulley carrier or frame in position a guide bar G is secured lengthwise over it and hinge plate C. At the lower end of the pulley carrier is secured a screweye K, the same being secured and arranged at a suitable distance apart on the circumference of the metal bandB, for conveying the cable or chains L, secured to each pulley carrier for operating the same upon the hinge C in opening and closing the bucket A when desired. v
The hinge C consists of a suitable metal plate of the desired length and thickness and in width sufficiently to extend above and below the band B for the purpose of forming a track for the pulley D, to travel on without coming in contact with the band B. In securing the hinge plate O to band B to connect sections M and N pivotally together one end of hinge plate C is secured to the right side of section N by two rivets or bolts I, While the other end of said hinge plate C, is pivotally secured to the other section M by one rivet or bolt J. The hinge C on the left side is secured in like manner, only reversed. See Fig. 3'.- T'he hinge plate O on the left side of section N, is pivotally secured to same,- while the other end of hinge plate -O is secured rigidly to the other section M by two rivets or bolts I, thus forming a leverage hinge as shown, with the mechanism for operating the seen in Fig. l; by reversing the position shown,

the bucket will open; thus the bucket may be opened or closed as desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A hoisting bucket comprising two portions, hinge-plates pivotally connecting said portions at their upper edges, and hangers embracing said plates and movable thereon.
2. A hoisting bucket comprising two semi' cylindrical portions, two hinge-plates each of which is rigidly secured to one of said portions and pivotally secured to the other portion, roller frames engaging both sides of said hinge plates, retaining guide bars and operating chain connected to said frames, and
