SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,563, dated November 14, 1893- I Application filed February 24, 1893. Serial 110.463.5558. (No model.)
i To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. CHRISTIE, a citizen of the United States, residingin Paterson, county of Passaic, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Messenger-Call and Telephone; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,such as will enable others Skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a combined messenger call and telephone, and itconsists in placing in the main circuit of a messenger cal] box a telephone with a switch, by means of which the telephone may be alternately brought into and out of the main circuit, and when brought in, the call box is thrown out of circuit.
It also consists in the-combination and arrangement of parts whereby the call box and telephone may be alternately used, and also in the combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.
The drawing is a diagrammatic view of my present invention; the various wire connections being indicated thereon.
In said drawing, a represents a messenger I box a and leaves the latter through Wires 0 and 10 having the intermediate switch ring '5. The wire 1) leads to the telephone receiver 0, the latter being also connected by wire (1 to the binding post tot the secondary coil of the transmitter b. The other end of said secondary coil is connected through binding post 3 with the main circuit wire at. The binding post 8 is also connected to the contact piece 6 by the wirer. The primary coil of the transmitter b is connected by wires u and o and intermediate primary coil B with the battery d in the usual manner.
In operation the receiver a of the telephone is suspended by switch ring t' upon the switch arm f, thus depressing said switch arm and thus bringing the call box in the main circuit. This is the normal position of the apparatus, thatis to say the main circuit transmitter b and receiver 0 both into the main circuit, which is completed through wires m, 0,10, and wires q and n. The message is then sent over the telephone direct to the station. By this arrangement the operator can transmit to the station the message to be delivered without waiting for a messenger to come from said station to his office and thus time and unnecessarylabor arethereby saved.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a messenger call system, the combination of the call box and the main circuit, a telephone receiver placed in said main circuit, a switch ring placed in said main circuit between the call box and the receiver, with the transmitter and its induction coil placed in the primary circuit of the telephone battery, and with the secondary circuit of the induction coil, connected through one binding post with one pole of the receiver and through another binding post with the contact plate of a switch, and with a spring controlled arm adapted to receive the switch ring, all said parts being so arranged, that when the switch ring rests on the switch arm,
