SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 508, 526, `dated November 14, 1893.

.To all whom it may concern: l
Be it known that I, JOHN R. PERKINS, of Milford, county of Hillsborough, State of New Hampshire, have invented an Improvement in 'Phill-Couplings, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying'drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
My invention is embodied in a thill coupling of that class inwhich the lugs of the axle clip are provided with open notches to receive the thill pin which is retained seated in the said notches by a spring connected with the'thill and bearing on the lugs of the axle clip.
The invention relates to details of construction of the thill spring vwhich will be hereinafter described.
Figure l is a side elevation of a portion of a thill and a coupling therefor, embodying this invention; Fig. 2 a front elevation of the axle member of the coupling; Fig. 3 a corresponding elevation-of the thill member of the coupling detached; Fig. 4 a sectional detail on line az, Fig. l, and Fig. 5 a detail showing the forward end of the coupling spring.
The axle member of the coupling comprises lugs or ears a between which the end b of the thill is received, the said lugs being shown in this instance as connected with the axle c bythe usual clip a2. The said lugs a have substantially vertical open recesses or notches a3 rounded at their lower ends to conform to the usual thill pin b2 which projects from the sides of theend of the thill as shown in Fig. 3, so as to enter the notches las when the endof the thill is between the lugs a. The outer surfaces of said lugs a are cam-shaped as shown at a4, said surfaces not being concentric with the Vseat for the thill pin, but being at the greatest vdistance therefrom at a point diagonally below and in front of said seat and converging upward toward the front side of the recess ai as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
In order to prevent the thill pin b2 from risingl out of the notch a3 the thill b is provided with a stout spring d the lower end d2 of which is wide enough to bear against the outer surfaces of both lugs aand standss below the projecting ends of the thill pin b2 as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The said thill spring d operates to hold the thill pin rmly seated in the notches a3, when the vehicle is in use and enables the thills to be with the axle member of the coupling in the operation of coupling them together, the portion d2 of the spring that bears against the lugs is provided with` side wings or ears d3, properly arranged to extend upward at the sides of the lugs a., so as to stand at the ends of the thill pin b2, as best shown in Figs. 1 and 4, thereby preventing endwise movement of the Alat-ter when the coupling is engaged. The said ears d3, also engage the ends of the pin b2, when the thill is uucoupled as shown in Fig..3, thus preventing possibility of said pin becoming detached and being lost.
The spring d is shown as provided at itsl connecting the safety strap, as should be done whenever the tliills are coupled or uncoupled. l
I claiml. The combination of the axle clip having lugs with open notches, and the thill pin to enter said notches; with the thill spring having a portion d2, adapted to bear 011 the outer surfaces of said lugs, and provided with ears d3, projecting across and adapted to engage with the ends of the said thill pin, subst-antially as described.
2. The combination with a separable thill coupling comprising an axle clip with notched lugs, the thill iron and thill pin and spring, of the safety strap hook d4, substantially as described. Y
