To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTERTHOMAS SYKEs, a citizen of the United States", residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Condenser or Finisher Carding-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to condenser or finisher carding engines or machines; and it relates more particularly to the construction and arrangement of the dofier-rolls thereof.
Hitherto the rolls constituting the ring-doffers of carding machines or engines have generally been provided with detachable rings formed of leather or the like having wire staples inserted through the same and disposed at an angle to the surface thereof and such' rings mounted on the roll or cylinder at suitable distances apart, but the main objections to such rings have been, that they required constant stripping for removing accumulating extraneous matter from about the prongs or wires constituting the clothing thereof, which not only tended to disarrange the operative positions of the same for effective action, but also in ashort time rendered it necessary to remove the ring-doffers from the rolls or cylinders of the machine in order to replace the same with new rings. Moreover,
such rings in use very imperfectly straightened or combed out the entangled fib'rous'material in its passage from the carding cylinder anterior to being formed into sliver and its release from the rub-rolls or aprons 0f the condenser or finisher-for permitting of the spinning thereof. Then such rings when fastened or tacked to the surfaces of rolls or cylinders of wood or the like, in practice presented further objections, among Which may be mentioned the warping and stretching of the leather as well as the breaking away of the wires or prongs constituting the clothing thereof, along unprotected portions of the bands or strips, necessitating thereby frequent stoppages of the-machines for removal of the rings for repairs or replacement of the rolls or cylinders with new bands or rings.

in order to enable" moist or wet material in its passage from the carding cylinder to such .roll or cylinder 'to'be so treated as to-enhancef the 7 character of the product thron the thorough combing or straightening out offthe 1??! same in'parallel threads or courses prior to its delivery to rub-rolls or aprons for forming linto sliver; third, to provide a doffer-roll composed of a series of integral saw-toothed rings formed of narrow strips or fillets of metal closely arranged in parallel courses in con-. tradistinction to being wound spirally around the roll or cylinder and with intervening smooth or plain surfaces or spaces provided between each of the series of saw-toothed rings constituting the doffer roll or cylinder for straightening or combing out with uniformity'and for enhancing the character of the fibrous material so treated prior to its delivery to rub rolls or aprons for further treatment thereby and preparatory to the spinning thereof; fourth, to provide a doEer-roll for a condenser carding engine or machine withintegrally formed rings arranged around the periphery thereof and with the teeth of each ring projecting therefrom in closely arranged parallel courses and with intervening smooth surfaced spaces between the series of companion toothed rings and the respective teeth thereof arranged in such manner as to present a staggered position with respectto each other for enabling in the use of the same fibrous material issuing from the carding cylinder to be'taken up by theteeth of each of the series of rings of the roll or cylinder and thoroughly combed or straightened out into parallel or analogous courses and with extraneous matter removed therefrom preparatory to the formation of the same into sliver or the like and before delivery to sub rolls or aprons for forming into rovings; and fifth, to providean expeditiousandeconomical method for forming such adofierroll or cylinder with a series of integral saw-toothed rings and with intervening smooth surfaced spaces between companion integral saw-toothed rings disposed along the periphery thereof.
My invention consists of a dolfer-roll for a condenser or finisher carding engine or machine, provided with integral metal sawtoothed grouped rings arranged at suitable distances apart and with intervening smooth surfaced spaces between companion sawtoothed integral grouped rings arranged along the periphery thereof and the teeth of each of the saw-toothed rings of the series of grouped rings occupying staggered positions with respect to each other.
My invention further consists of a dotferroll for a carding machine, comprising a hollow cylinder provided with an internal coil for heating or warming the surface thereof and the cylinder provided with a series of integral saw-toothed rings each composed of strips or fillets of metal having asaw-toothed edge set into closely arranged parallel grooves in groups formed in the body of the cylinder and made integral therewith by being calked or otherwise secured thereto and intervening smooth surfaced spaces between the respective integral saw-toothed rings arranged along the periphery of the cylinder, the construction and arrangement being such, as to thoroughly or elficiently straighten or comb out and strip the fibrous material in passing from the carding cylinder to theru b-rolls or aprons by forming the same into regular or uniform strips, or slivers preparatory to the spinning thereof. 7

My invention further com prises the method of making a dotfer roll or cylinderfora carding machine, which consists in providing a roll or cylinder with grooves in closely arranged parallel courses with respect to the end of the roll or cylinder and with intervening smooth surfaces between each group of grooves to constitute each integral ring between the intervening smooth surfaced spaces of the roll or cylinder, cutting, finishing or shaping teeth along one edge ofa strip or fillet of metal and presenting under pressure the strip or fillet to and inserting into the series or groups of closely arranged parallel grooves of the cylinder to form a series of integral saw-toothed rings and calking each inserted group of saw-toothed strips or fillets to con-. stitute one of the series of rings of the roll or cylinder to position.
My invention further comprises the method of forming a dotfer-roll or cylinder by providing closely arranged parallel grooves in groups and intervening smooth surfaced spaces between the series of groups of parallel grooves, forming in regular sequence along the edge of a strip or fillet of metal saw-teeth and conveying and presenting the strip or fillet to and securing the same into the groups of grooves and calking the inserted saw toothed strips or fillets into the groups of grooves of the roll or cylinder with the teeth arranged in close parallel courses of each ring of the series comprising the roll or cylinder occupying a flaring staggered position with respect to each other for effectually combing, straightening out and im:
proving the character or quality of fibrous material conducted from the carding cylinder for treatment thereby and preparatory to its delivery to rub-rolls or aprons as sliver for forming into skeins or ribbons, for permitting of the spinning of the same. r
My invention further consists of a doiferroll for a carding machine,comprising a cylinder provided. with integral metal sawtoothed rings arranged at suitable distances apart and calked thereto and with smooth intervening surfaced spaces between eachof the rings of the series constituting the roll or cylinder; and my invention further consists of the improvements in metal dolfer-rolls for carding engines or machines provided with integral saw-toothed metal rings having intervening smooth surfaced spaces between each of the rings thereof such as hereinafter described and claimed.

Moreover, the coarse or more common fibrous materials, such for example as are used in the making of a low grade of carpet fabrics, re; quired to be treated by such machines as hereinbefore described, are at certain seasons presented thereto for being worked in a more or less moist or wet state, and in such condition it is very difficult to satisfactorily work the same, and hence considerable waste even with undue care exercised, will accumulate.
Practice has also demonstrated that such fibrous materials as require treatment in cardingengines or machines, are afiected by changes of temperature, and in such manner as to cause the material to become rampant or wild, and consequently it is a source of considerable trouble at times to properly manipulate the same so as to-s'ecure uniformity or regularity in the. delivery from the carding cylinder ;to the dofier-rolls or cylinders.
In the employment of doifer-rolls such; as
*havehitherto'been employed with leather bands having staples inserted therethrough to form the clothing thereof in the introduction of heat into the interior ofthe cylinder,
it has been found in attempts made in that direction, that such deleteriously affected the leather, that is, caused the same to warp, as
well as destroyed the position and efficiency of the staples or clothing of such leather bands. Moreover, the warping of such leather bands applied to the rolls or cylinders superinduced undue clogging of extraneous matter around and about the staples thereof and to overcome which has been a desideratnm for a long time and a dilemma which has been regarded as unsurmountable, because means have not proven in the past to be at hand to overcome successfully the same or accomplish the desired results, until a doffer-roll or cylinder constructed according to my invention was designed and employed, because practice has fully demonstrated that the above mentioned objectionable features are entirely overcomethereby', and so that such fibrous materials as hereinbefore described can be treated with the employment of such dotfer-rolls or cylinder under any and all conditions or changes of temperature with a resultant superior product by such treatment, and with thereby a great saving of the accumulating waste made, moreover, with a saving of time and labor of stopping the machine to strip the dofier-rings of the rolls, or cylinders, because such rings are self strippers in this respect, that thefibrous material by reason of the arrangement of the teeth in staggered position in close parallel courses in contradistinction to being arranged in spiral courses, will not adhere thereto and after a long interval of time in the treatment of the material and stoppingof the machine, it will be observed that the series of teeth in parallel courses of the rings due to the manner of arranging the same as herein before described and securing them to the rings comprising the dofier rolls or cylinders, are maintained entirely free from any matter whatsoever, which is a result not heretofore regarded as possible or obtainable.
Among the advantageous features incident to the use of a dotfer-roll or cylinder such as hereinbefore described, may be mentioned first, that the fleece or fibrous material treated thereby is thoroughly combed or straightened out and stripped of extraneous matter before being presented to the rubrolls or aprons for forming the same into sliver; second, by reason of the arrangement of the saw-toothed fillets or strips securely in the parallel grooves of the series of rings integrally applied to the roll or cylinder 0, in contradislinction to the fillets or strips being spirally disposed thereon and with the respective teeth thereof occupying staggered positions with respect to each other, is due the superior results obtained of the thorough combing out of the material undergoing treat ment thereby and the utter lack of adherence of extraneous matter thereto, because practice has demonstrated that they do not become clogged with such matter or with the fleece or fibrous material undergoing treatment; hence stopping of the machine is entirely avoided and the fleece or fibrous material combed or straightened out into parallel threads or courses thereby, is appreciably enhanced and commands a higher figure as an article; third, greater uniformity in the Working of the material is efiected and a far better resultant product by the treatment is obtained, and fourth, owing to the solid character of the saw-toothed rings there is an entire absence of any tendency of the same to warp or to work loose on the roll or cylinder; and moreover, these dolfer-rolls or cylinders can be set closer to the carding cylinder, thereby insuring more perfect clearance for the stock or other matter delivered therefrom and thus to enable the carding cylinder to present a superior quality or character of material for the complete or thorough straightening, combing out or cleaning by thedofier rolls and anterior to the presentation of the same to the rubrolls or aprons for transforming the fibrous or fleecy material into sliver, skeins or ribbons preparatory to the spinning thereof for subsequent uses in the arts.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a carding |nachine,a doiferroll, comprising a roll or cylinder having parallel groups of grooves and intervening smooth surfaced spaces between the groups and aseries of saw-toothed metal strips secured into said groups of grooves to form rings, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a carding machine, a doffer-roll, comprising a roll or cylinder having parallel groups of saw-toothed strips or fillets constituting integral rings, smooth surfaced spaces between the groups of integral rings and the teeth of each ring fiaring and staggered with respect to the others of the roll or cylinder, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a carding-machine, a doffer-roll comprising a hollow-cylinderhavingacoilof pipe mounted therein and having integral sawtoothed metal strips or fillets arranged in parallel courses in grooves thereof and forming rings disposed at suitable distances apart around and along the periphery of said cylinder, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. In a carding-machine, a roll or cylinder provided with integral saw-toothed metal fillets or strips arranged in close parallel groups of grooves forming rings and smooth surfaced spaces between the groups of saw-toothed rings of the series constituting the doffer-roll or cylinder, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
5. The method of forming a dolfer-roll for a carding machine, which consists in forming in the body of the roll or cylinder closely arranged grooves in groups and in parallel courses to the ends of the roll or cylinder, cutting saw teeth in one edge of a metal strip or fillet, shaping or flaring the teeth and inserting into the gooups of parallel grooves to form rings and intervening smooth or plain surfaced spaces between each of the groups of saw-toothed rings constituting the roll or cylinder and calking or securing the toothed strips or fillets to position in each of the groups of grooves or recesses comprising a ring of the series of the roll or cylinder, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
6. Themethod 0f forminga dolfer roll or cylinder, which consists in forming grooves in the body of the roll or cylinder, in groups and in parallel coursesand smooth or plain surfaced spaces between each ofthe. groups of grooves, forming on the edge of a strip or fillet of metal saw-teethand presenting under pressure the toothed strip or fillet to each of the groups of grooves and inserting the same into said grooves to form saw-toothed. rings and rigidly securing the same in said grooves with the respective teeth in parallel courses in each ring staggered with respect to the others thereof, substantially as and for the V purposes setforth. V
7. A dofEer-roll for a condenser or finisher carding machine, comprising a cylinderwith parallel groups of grooves formed in the body thereof and with saw-toothed metal strips or fillets suitably secured into' said parallel groups of grooves to form rings, so that the teeth thereof occupy staggered positions with respect to each other, smooth surfaced spaces between eachv of the groups of rings and means for securing said saw-toothed metal strips or fillets ,to position in said parallel groups of grooves, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
