BRAKE-BEAM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,051, dated November '7, 1893.

To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY B. RoBIsoHUNe, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Kalamazoo, in the county of Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brake-Beams; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, Whereinp I Figure lis a plan View, partly in section, of a a trussed brake beam embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view of one end of the beam or compression member, a cup or sleeve thereon, the brake head, end cap, and nut of the tension member, the end of the tension member being shown in elevation. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the parts last recited taken at right angles to Fig. 2 on the line -a: thereof. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the cup or sleeve. Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the cup or sleeve. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal central section of thecup or sleeve on the line y-y, Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the brake-head. My present invention relates to certain improvements in the means for securing the end cap to the beam, whereby the cap is forced against the head and so binds the same as to clamp it to the beam after the head has been adj usted to the line of draft or applied power, andwith relation to the wheel 5 and while it may be generally mentioned as an improvement on the devices therefor, covered by Letters Patent No. 494,709, dated April 4, 1893, it is not to be understood as limited thereby in its application, as the corrugations of head and beam ange shown inl said recited Letters Patent, if desired,.may be omitted from the combinations of the present invention,'and
for purposes of illustration, have in fact been so omitted.
The invention, broadly stated, embraces the combination with the perforated'beam end of a perforated cap, the axial centers ofthe perforations in cap and beam-being dierent, and a through pin or its equivalent, whereby a cam or wedge mechanism is obtained to force the cap down on its seat and securelyv clamp the brake-head to the beam. I will now proceed to describe my invention more fully, so that others skilled in the art to which it appertains, may apply the same.
In the drawings A indicates the compression member or beam proper, B the strut or post, C a sleeve or cup on the end of the beam, D the tension rod threaded at its ends and provided with tension nuts d d, E E suitable brake-heads, F, F, end caps which house the end of the tension rod, and tension nuts, and G, G, split keys or cotters which secure the end caps to the beam and cause the end caps to clamp and conne Athe brake heads.
It is to be understood, that the brake beam is not necessarily a trussed beam, as the beam may be of any desired character; it is also to be understood that the detachable cups or sleeves C C are not essential features, as the equivalent thereof-`the bearing flange or seat for the inner face of the brake-head-may be formed orpermanently attached to the beam A; however for purposes of illustration I have chosen a trussed cambered brake beam, of a form now well known, and detachable end cups or sleeves. Said sleeves C, C, (or the beam) are provided with bearing flanges e for the inner faces of the brake-heads, which flanges are shown plain, but may be either plain or corrugated, and if the head is to be adjustable the sleeves should be in the nature of journals upon which the brake-head, after it is on, may be rotated to present the brake shoe properly to the wheel, said position to be determined by the line of applied power, the point of suspension of the brake-beam, the height of brake beam above the track, the structure of the beam, and other conditions well understood by those skilled in the art. The outer end of each sleeve (or of the beam) may be perforated or provided with a pin hole c, the bore of4 which has at midlength a swell or cam surface c', (see Fig. 3,) .adapted to force the key' or pin o the axial line.

Having thus described my invention, what g I claim, and desire: to secure, by Letters Pat.- a ent, is t 1. 2. The combination with abrake beam having a seat or danger forone side of the brake head and a critter*` hole, having a` swell within the bore thereof, of a brake-head, an end cap a having cotter holes, and a cotter or pin, substantiaily as and for the purposes specified.
