E. MAYO; H NOTGHING LAMP UHIMNEYS.

" NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER MAYO, OF BEVERLY, MASSACHUSETTS.
NOTCHINGILAMP-CHIMNEYS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 507,626, dated October 31, 1893.
Application filed June 16,1893- Serial No. 477,811. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER E. MAYO, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Notching Lamp-Chimneys, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in notching glass lamp chimneys for the purpose of providing air inlet passages at the lower or base end of such chimney where it fits the burner and my invention relates to a quick and simple means for making such notches as will hereinafter be more fully shown and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 represents a top plan View of my improved device; and Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the same partly shown in section. Fig. 3 represents a perspective View of the notched chimney.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
In Figs. 1 and 2, A represents a suitable bench or work supporting table on which is arranged a metal plate B preferably provided with an upwardly projecting centering hub B as shown. On the upper side of the metal plate B is arranged a series of radial ribs 1), b, b, 1), upon which the base end 0 of the glass lamp chimney O is made to rest during the notching operation. Around the metal plate B and opposite to the respective ridges b, b, b, b, thereon are arranged a series of gas burners or blow pipes D, D, D, D, having flame perforations d, d, at their inner ends, each such blow pipe having the respective gas and air supply pipes E and F leading from suitable sources of gas and air supplies under pressure as may be most practical and convenient. If so desired the blow pipes D, D, may be vertically adjustable relative to the plate B and its supporting bench or table A as shown in Fig. 2 and I have for this purpose shown the pipes E, F, screw threaded and provided with adjustable fastening and regulating nuts e, e, f, f, but any other desired adjusting mechanism may be employed without departing from the essence of my invention.
In carrying out my invention I proceed as follows: The glass chimney O to be notched is placed on the ridges b, b, and the ignited gas jets G are forced from the burners or blow pipes D, D, in spots against the lower exterior of the glass chimney where it is supported on said ridges b, b, causing the glass to become plastic at such places and enabling the operator to press the chimney down until the non-heated portions come in contact with the top of the plate B. During such downward motion of the chimney the ridges b, b, are caused to enter the plastic portions of the lower edge of the chimney causing the notches C", O", to be made therein as shown in Fig.
3. The now notched chimney is withdrawn from the 'plate B and gradually cooled in a cooling oven and so on. By this means I am enabled to'notch the chimneys in a very eflicient, quick and accurate manner without danger of breakage as fully set forth and described.
What I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim is 1. The herein described method of notching glass chimneys consisting in heating the edge thereof in spots and forcing it against ridges on which the chimney is held, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
.2. The herein described device for notching glass chimneys consisting of a base plate having a series of ridges combined with blow pipes or burners arranged outside of said base plate opposite to the respective ridges for the purpose of heating the edge of the chimney in spots while resting and forced against said ridges and onto the base plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 1st day of June, A. D. 1893.
WALTER E. 'MAYO.
