WATER-CLOSET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 507,273, dated October 24, 1893.

To all whom/it may concern:

Be it known that I, HAMILTON A. J UKES, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Winnipeg, in the county of Selkirk and Province of Manitoba,have invented certain (new and useful Improvements in Water-Clos- "ets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear,and exact description of the invenlon, such as will enable others skilled in the rt to which it appertains to make and use he same. 'My invention relates to improvements in 1r closet bowls, and more particularly to 7 "1 ventilation thereof,and it has forits general object to provide a water closet bowl embodying means for conducting a continuous current of air from a point adjacent to the door upon which the bowl is placed, up to and around the inside of the bowl and out through a suitable vent pipe, whereby all foul odors or gases will be conducted from the bowl whether the lid or cover of the same is opened or closed.

Other objects and advantages of theinvention will appear from the following description and claims when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a vertical section of a water closetbowl embodying myinvention, and Fig. 2, is a horizontal section taken in the plane indicated by the line w, w, of Fig. 1.

Referring by letter to said drawings A, indicates a water closet bowl, which may be of any approved general construction, and B, 0, respectively indicate the water inlet or flush ing pipe, and the drain pipe thereof.

The bowl A, may be formed, from porcelain, iron, or other suitable material, and it is provided, preferably upon its forward side with a conduit or tube D, which extends to a point adjacent to the floor upon which the bowl is placed and has its lower end open for a purpose presently described. This conduit or tube D, extends upwardly to a point adjacent to the upper edge of the bowl, where it merges into a curvilinear conduit or tube E, which extends partly around the inner side of the bowl and has its ends open, as shown.

F, indicates a vent pipe which leads from the upper portion of the bowl A, preferably at a point diametrically opposite to the pipe or conduit D, and serves to conduct the foul odors or gas from the bowl. This pipe F, may discharge into the usual ventilating flue, or it may be carried through the wall or roof of the room into the open air, as desired.

It is obvious from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, that when the lid or cover of the closet is closed, a continuous current of air will take through the conduits D, and E, and the bowl, and up and out through the vent pipe F. By reason of the conduit E, being arranged in the manner shown and described, with respect to the vent pipe F, it will be seen that a space is afforded between said conduit and pipe, for the creation of a suction through the medium of which the foul odor and gas will be drawn up and into the pipe F, and the airin the bowl will be rendered pure and wholesome.

It will be readily seen from the foregoing description, that I have provided a simple water closet bowl which will at all times be pure and wholesome, and one that may be manufactured at a cost very little greater than the cost of the ordinary bowl.

Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a Water closet bowl, the combination with the bowl; of a bent pipe F, communicating with the upper portion thereof, the conduit D, arranged at a point remote from the vent pipe and leading from a point adjacent to the floor upon which the bowl is placed, and a conduit E arranged upon the inside of the bowl adjacent to the upper edge thereof, and communicating at an intermediate point in its length with the conduit D, and also comunicating with the interior of the bowl substantially as specified.

2. In a water closet bowl, the combination of the bowl, the vent pipe F, communicating with the upper portion of the bowl, the conduit D, arranged at a point remote from the vent pipe and leading from a point adjacent to the floor upon which the bowl is placed, and the pipe or conduit E, connected at an intermediate point in its length to the upper end of the conduit D, and extending partly around the bowl and having open ends, substantially as specified.

It is hereby certified that in Letters" Patent, No. 507,273, granted. October 24, 1893, upon theapplication of Hamilton A. J nkes, of Winnipeg, Canada, for an improvement in Water-Closets, an error appears in the printed specification requiring the following correction, Vizi: In line 80 the Word bent should read vent; and that the said Letters Patent should he read with this correction therein that the same may conform to therecord of the case in the Patent Office.
