- W. A. MAOAN.
DETAGHABLE JAGKBT FOR STEAM PIPES.
Patented Oct. 24, 1893;
W/TNESSES/ 1M 71!.
rrnn STATES PATENT OFrIc,
WILLIAM A. MAOAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO ROBERT W. LYSLE, OF SAME PLACE.
DETACHABLE JACKET FOR STEAM-PIPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 507,145, dated October 24,1893.
Application filed April 19, 1 893.
T on whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. MAOAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Jackets or Coverings for Steam and other Pipes, of which the following is a specification. to My invention has relation to jackets or coverings for steam and other pipes; and it relates more particularly to their construction and arrangement for such purposes.
The principal objects of my invention are {5 first, to provide a comparatively simple, durable, efflcient and ornamental detachable casing or covering for steam and other pipes; second, to provide a casing, jacket or coverin g for the packing cylinders or sectional :0 tubes of steam and other pipes and so arranged as to be adapted to compensate for expansion and contraction; third, to provide a casing, jacket or covering for pipes having a flexible material applied thereto and adapt- 2 5 ed to firmly support the same in position; fourth, to provide a jacket, casing or covering composed of strips of wood or other material with a canvas, asbestus or other backing fabric or material applied thereto for supporting the samein position and with retaining means connected therewith fifth, to provide a jacket, casing or covering for a steam or other composition covered or packed pipe or cylinder and with devices for detachably supporting 5 5 the same to position in connection therewith; and sixth, to provide a jacket, casing or covering for a packed or covered pipe, tube or cylinder and retaining devices adapted to be connected therewith in such manner as to i permit of expansion and to allow of contraction of the packing or covering of the pipe, tube or cylinder without affecting the surrounding jacket, casing or covering.
My invention consists of the improvements hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature and general features of my in vention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof; and in which- Figure 1, is a perspective view of a tube Serial No. 470,948. (No model.)
or sectional cylinder packing for a steam or other pipe with a surrounding casing, jacket or covering provided With retaining means therefor and with detachable bands clipped to each other. and the said View embodying the features of my invention; and Fig. 2, is a similar view showing the tube or sectional packing cylinder with a flexible or jointed casing or jacket partially surrounding the same in detached position and exposing to view the backing fabric or supporting medium or material of the casing, jacket or covering.
Referring to the drawings a, is a sectional cylinder or tube made of asbestus, magnesia or other material having a surrounding cover of canvas, asbestus or other preferred material a.
b, is the surrounding casing, jacket or covering composed of a series of longitudinal 7o strips 17', of wood or other preferred material suitably applied or secured to a supporting medium or backing fabric or material as canvas, asbestus cloth or a non-heat conducting material 0.
d, is a metal or other band provided at one end with a pivotally supported loop (1, and at the other with a clip 0?, adapted to engage the loop 01', for firmly holding the surrounding jacket to position in contact with the packing cylinder or tube a.
e, is a loop provided with a support 6, rigidly secured to one of the longitudinal strips 1), adjacent to the meeting edge or side of another strip of the series of longitudinal strips 8 5 b, composing the jacket I), and provided with a clip 6 secured thereto and adapted to engage With the loop 6, for holding and maintaining the jacket in contact with the internal sectional tube or cylinder a. go
The casing, jacket or covering b, flexibly connected with the pliable backing fabric or material or supporting medium afiords the compensating means for expansion and contraction, due to abnormal heating or cooling 5 of the internal packing tube or sectional cylinder a. Moreover, this casing or jacket I), affords the means whereby the unsightly packing tube or cylinder a, due to discoloration by use, is concealed from view and such acket :00
presents the means also whereby an ornamental oolumn may be presented and at the same time a surrounding jacket or covering that may be readily removed for repairs or replacing the packing of a pipe that has become deteriorated by age or otherwise.
It has been found in practice that steam and other pipes in time packed with asbestos,
magnesia or other material discolor and dry 1 tion coverings are affected by the action set up between the surrounding atmosphere and the plastic material or composition constituting the packing in conjunction with the metal of the tubing or piping subjected internally according to circumstances to heat and cold, to deleterious action, but which is fully compensated for and prevented by the employment of jackets or surrounding coverings of the present invention.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A removable two-part covering for steam pipes and the like, composed of magnesia, asbestus or the like, a casing composed of narrow longitudinal strips secured to a flexible material and retaining devices, as described, for maintaining said casing to said covering, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM A. MAGAN. Witnesses:
