NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN M. CHRISTOPHER, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO WILLIAM C. LUDWIG, OF SAME PLACE.
SAND-BOX FOR CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 507,066, dated October 17, 1893. Application filed January 28, 1893. Serial No. 460.480. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. CHRISTOPHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Sand-Boxes for StreetRailway Cars, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to discharge sand either in a wet or dry condition or sand that contains large stones as will hereinafter fully appear.
In the further description of the said invention which follows reference is made to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof and in which Figure 1, is an exterior side view of a part of a street railwaycar to which my sand box is attached. Fig. 2 is a partly sectional side View of the sand box on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a front View of the same, and Fig. 4. a top View of Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts'of the drawings marked thereon.
Referring to the drawings, A is the car and B the sand box which is rectangular in cross section. At the top it is provided with a flange a which is adapted to bolt under the car as shown in Fig. 1. At the front of the box it curves inward so as to contract it near the bottom. lt also has an opening 0 hereinafter described.
0 is a double cut off which consists of a curved plate 61 adapted to enter the opening 0 to close the box and at the rear rests against a lug e on the inside of the same. From the curved plate leads a ribf which is provided with a boss 9 at each side thereof situated on a shaft h the ends of which are on the walls of the box. Beyond this boss the rib fextends down, and cast to it is another plate iwhich also serves to close the box when the curved plate is open. By this means the box is closed at all times so as to prevent the waste of sand.
It will be seen that sand boxes heretofore in use all have very small discharge openings, andif the sand is wet it becomes banked,
arm k for a purpose hereinafter described.
To this arm is attached a link D the other end of which is connected to an arm Z of a bell crank F. pivoted to a lug F dependent from the bottom of the car. The other arm m of the bell crank is secured to one end of a rod G. The other end is fastened to the hand lever H. Through the agency of the lever, rod, bell crank and link the rib f receives a movement carrying the curved plates 01 and t' which opens one and closes the other.
The side of the sand box near the top is fitted with a filling door I. This door serves as a funnel when open. It is provided with sides n shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3.
J is an agitator which consists of a bar 0 pivoted on a rod within the box. The upper end is provided with transverse pins 19 and the lower end q divided into two downwardly projecting prongs r and 3. These prongs serve in the moving of the braker.
The curved plate d is furnished with a toe piecetand it will be seen that in the movement of the curved plate the toe piece will strike the prong s and carry it forward until the toe piece can pass when the other prong will be carried down, and as the curved plate returns the prongs are carried back into their first position shown in Fig. 2. The agitator may however consist of a bar pivoted in a slot in the curved plate as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, which would have a vertical and horizontal movement.
The plate 2' is fitted with a spout it. This spout as shown in the drawings moves with the plate '8 but it maybe attached to the sand box thereby making it stationary.
I claim as my inventionthe sand and preventing packing of the same In a sanding device for street railway cars in the box, substantially as specified. the combination of an exterior sand box hav- Baltimore, Maryland, January 17, 1893. ing an exterior filling opening, a cut off to JOHN M. CHRISTOPHER. 5 open and close alternately combined with an Witnesses:
agitator so arranged as to be moved as the FRANCIS H. ABBES,
} out 01? is opened or closed thereby agitating T. E. MQOREADY.
