SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 507,019, dated October 17, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOEL LUCIA, of Nahma in the county of Delta and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Reels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hose reels, and it consists in thenovel features of construction hereinafter fully described and especially referred to in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved and convenient mechanism for winding hose after having been in use, which may remain at all times in acertain position adjacent the hydrant, the mechanism being so arranged as to efiect a double winding of the hose at the same time.
Referring to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, isa perspective view of my improved apparatus. Fig. 2, is a vertical sectional View of the same. Fig. 3, is a plan view with the top removed.
A designates the base of the reel case having the annular flange B and projecting through the base is the supply pipe 0 to which the inner end of the hoseD is connected. The upright reel casing E fits down over the flange E, to which it is secured by pins E and formed on one side between its center and lower end is the upright slot or opening F, while upon the opposite side of the casing and above the center thereof is a correspondingly formed opening G. One side of opening F is enlarged as shown at F, so that the end of the hose may be conveniently attached to hydrant 0, from without the casing. Both of said openings are adapted to be closed by the sliding shutters I.
Arranged vertically within the casing is the double spool J, the parts thereof being separated by the annular flange or head K, which latter is formed with a lateral depression K, as shown. The lower section of the spool is preferably made shorter than the upper section, as is here shown, and is smaller in diameter. The lower end of the spool is jourformed pinion N, secured to the horizontal shaft 0, extending transversely across the top of the casing and having upon its ends the cranks 0. By means of the arrangement here shown, I am enabled to revolve the spool in either direction and thus wind the hose thereon, as will be presently explained. The upper end of the casing is covered by a suitable capping P. Arranged adjacent the opposite side of the openings F and G, are the parallel rolls Q, one of which is mounted in the laterally movable bearings B, so that it may be adjusted to or from the other roll. These bearings are adjusted by the screws R, upon which they run as will be readily understood by referring to the drawings. In this wayIam enabled to press the hose while being wound and thus extract all the water which has remained therein.
I form the spool with separate winding surfaces so that the hose may be wound thereon without being detached from the hydrant, and this I accomplish by drawingoutward the same through slot F, as indicated inFig. 1 with the center of the hose confined in depressions K of shoulder K. By means of this arrangement it will be seen that when the spool is revolved a double Winding willbe effected, the lower spool winding inward the slack which has been drawn outward through the slot F, while wound upon the upper spool is the upper or outer end of the hose. Thus it will be seen that the hose case may remain in one position over the hydrant at all times, while the'hose may be unwound therefrom and drawn to the desired position for use. It is well adapted for city or country purposes where sidewalks and pavements, lawns and flower beds are to be watered, and it is also a most desirable appliance to have at hand in case of fire.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patout, is-
1. An improved hose reel comprising a casing, a double spool arranged therein, ashoulder or flange for separating the spools having a lateral depression, and a means for operating the spools, substantially as shown and described.
2. An improved hose reel comprisinga casing, a double spool mounted therein, the said casing being formed with slots opposite the spool sections, and rolls adjustable with relation to each other arranged adjacent the said slots, for the purpose substantially as shown and described.
3. An improved hose reel comprising a casing having a slot formed in its wall, a spool within the casing, parallel rolls arranged adjacent the slot of the casing, movable bearings, in which one of the said rolls is mounted, and screws upon which the said bearings move, substantially as shown and described.
4. An improved hose reel comprising a casing slotted vertically upon opposite sides, an
20 upright spool within the casing, a flange between the spool ends which divides the same into two winding sections, and a means for securing a hose to the said flange, substantially as shown and described.
5. An improved hose reel comprising a casing having slots F and G upon its opposite sides, rollers Q on the casing adjacent said slots which are adjustable toward each other, an upright spool in the casing formed in two winding sections separated by a flange, the upper section having a greater diameter than the lower section, and a'means for securing a hose between its ends to the flange, substantially as shown and described.
