UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL F. COLE, OF WELLSBOROUGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
DRAFT-EQUALIZER.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,844, dated October 17, 1893.
Application filed March 16, 1893. Serial No. 466.349- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL F. COLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wellsborough, in the county of Tioga and State of.
- single or double tree may be attached.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this application: Figure l is a perspective view of my device secured upon a wagon, with a double-tree attached. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the device secured to a double-tree. Fig. 3, is a perspective View of the toothed plate. Fig. 4, is a perspective view of the toothed adjustable plate, with one of the set screws and washers.
The same reference letters denote the same parts throughout the several figures.
The toothed or corrugated plate A, has a series of set screw holes a, and at either end is secured by screws B to the wagon axle O, or preferably set into the front of the doubletree D, leaving the teeth or corrugations b, projecting beyond the surface of the doubletree.
The adjusting plate E, has upon its inner face like corrugations or teeth 0; a central projection F upon its outer face, and its arms Gr have each a slot f extending from said projection nearly to the end of the arms. Through these slots f and into the set screw holes a, extend the set screws H having a washer g, the edges thereof being cut away at h' for the purpose of allowing the adj ustable plate E to be moved upon the set screws, the entire length of the slots. The teeth or corrugations in the two plates being of exactly the same caliber, they mesh and are held firmly together when the set screws are screwed up. When it is desired to move the adjusting plate to either side beyond the limit of the slots, the set screws have simply to be changed to another set of set screw holes in the plate A. The hammer bolt I is inserted into a hole in the projection E so as to connect a single or double tree to the adjustable plate. It will be observed that the adjusting plate can be moved to either side of the center of the plate A, by simply loosening the set screws, and still mesh with the teeth of said plate. And that by forming a series of set screw holes in the plate A, the adjusting plate may be moved still farther to either side by replacing said set screws.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to employ with a draft equalizer, two toothed or corrugated plates and cause the teeth of each plate to mesh together, and I therefore do not claim any such broad idea, but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a draft equalizer, the toothed plate provided with a central projection, and having a slot formed upon each side of and adjacent to the said projection, combined with the toothed plate having a series of set screw holes adapted to register with said slots, and means for securing the two plates adj ustably together, as set forth.
2. In a draft equalizer, the toothed plate having a series of set screw holes, and means for securing it to a double-tree, combined with the adj nstable toothed plate having slots, and the set screws extending through said slots, and into the said holes, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL F. COLE.
