HORSE-HITCHING DEVICE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,656, dated October 17, 1893.

Be it known that we, JULIUS BENEDIKT and ISIDOR KLEIN, merchants, both subjects of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at 32 Kaiser Joseph Strasse, in the city of Vienna, in the Empire of Austria-Hungary, have invented new and useful Improved Devices forStoppingRunaway orBolting Horses, of which the following is a description.

This invention refers to an arrangement for stopping runaway or bolting horses, and differs from existing devices in that it supplements the efforts of the driver in stopping or checking horses, which are bolting for any reason. This is efiected by means of a cord or strap attached to the bridle, and wound on a spool or drum slowly but irresistibly, which spool or drum is rotated, when operated by a lever or other suitable releasing device, by means of a gearing which is driven from the axle of the wheels. When not in use this cord hangs loosely so as not to interfere with the free movement of the horse.

Referringto the drawings which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the arrangement. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. Fig.3 is a modification. Fig. 4: shows the collarf in detail. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the grooved disk.

The driver or coachman when leaving his box, or when the horses are bolting, causes,by operating the levera, the sliding collar f to move forward so as to engage and lock with the stationary collar d, as aforesaid, so that the rotary motion of the car wheel is is transmitted to the shaft 9 and to the drum fixed thereon. By means of the pinions e, e the cord, strap or the like, which was previously slack, will now be Wound steadily, and without jerking on such drum 1', until the horses head is so drawn back, that it loses its support in the collar.

In the modification shown in Fig. 3 the collar or sleeve d is movable on the hub b, and by engaging the lug o with the groove 0 of such sleeve d, the miter wheels Z, Z are operated, and through the shaft n of such pinion Z a worm gearing m, m and thereby the shaft g carrying the drum 2' is rotated.

Having now particularly described and as certained the nature of this invention, we declare that what we claim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In combination the vehicle axle, the clutch thereon, with operating means therefor the shaft g, the drum thereon arranged independently of the clutch said drum having a rope connected thereto and the speed reducing gearing between the clutch and the shaft g, substantially as described.

2. In combination, the vehicle axle, the clutch, with operating means therefor the drum 2' having the rope connected thereto and the speed reducing gearingbetween'the clutch and the drum, substantially as described.
