A. P. WILLIAMS.
GAR VESTIBULE No. 506,293. Patented Got. 10, 1893.
, Wilnesses. Inventor? UNITED STATES PATENT GFFICE.
ANDREW P. WILLIAMS, OF JEFFERSONVILLE, INDIANA.
CAR-VESTIBU LE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,293, dated October 10, 1893.
Application filed March 24, 1893.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANDREW P. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at J effersonville, in the county of Clark and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Vestibules; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The special object of the invention is to entirely inclose the contiguous platforms in a train of cars so as to exclude rain, snow, dust, cinders and the exterior air, thereby affording a continuous protected passage from one end of the train to the other. These vestibules are also intended to lessen oscillation in the" cars and to provide increased resistance in case of collisions.
The invention consists in holding the entire surface of the faceplate in close contact with the faceplate of the adjoining car by an upright spiral spring compressible from both directions.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a view of two vestibule cars connected, one being shown in side elevation and the other in vertical sec tion, and Fig. 2 a detail view of the V-bolt, eyebolt spiral spring and straps.
In the drawings, A B represent the face- Serial No. 467,468. (No model.)
plates of two adjacent cars pressing against each other, and C C the upper and lower bufier arms which are movable horizontally in suitable guides. With these movable arms,
I connect by bolts or otherwise, the flexible straps D D passing over the pulleys E E, one end of the strap being fastened to a bufferarm and the other to an eyebolt F,having the collars f f bearing against the ends of the spiral spring G which surrounds the bolt, or to the V-bolt H- whose arms h h are end threaded andheld to the collar f by the nuts I I. By this combination of instrumentalities I effectually overcome the tendency of the face plates A B to separate from .one another. The double-acting spring equalizes all pressure against the surface of the faceplates from top to bottom and projects the two faceplates against each other.
W hatI claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
In vestibule cars, the combination with the adjustable buffer-arms of the faceplates, of the flexible straps D D pulleys E E, eyebolt F, spiral spring G, and V-bolt H, the whole arranged substantially as shown, to operate .in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
7 In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANDREW P. WILLIAMS. Witnesses:
W. E. HEDGoooK, B. O. WATTS.
