UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM F. TORREY, OF AUBURN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ZECI'IARIAH R. TUCKER, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
ERASER-CASE'.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,733, dated September 26, 1893.
Application filed May 4, 1893. Serial No. 472,980. (No model.)
.'Zo all whom it may concern.'
Beit known that I, WILLIAM F. TORREY, of Auburn, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eraser- Cases; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanyng drawings, forming part of this specifica- Ion.
This invention has reference to improvements in eraser-cases.
The object of the invention is to so construct an eraser-case that, while being perfectly protected, the eraser may be drawn forward from time to time and, when completely used, can be replaced by a new one.
The invention consists in the peculiar and simple construction of the case and the combination therewith of the eraser-bar, as will hereinafter be more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
Figure l represents a side view of the case with a portion of the eraser-bar extending therefrom. Fig. 2 represents a cross-sectional view of the case taken on a line @-5, Fig 1. Fig. 3 represents a view of the casein the open position, the eraser-bar being shown therein.
Similar numbers of reference designate corresponding parts throughout.
As heretofore constructed cases for containing and protecting eraser-bars of erasive rubber have been constructed of boxes, or tubes, open at the end from which a portion of the eraser-bar extended. When that portion of the bar extending from the case became worn down it was difficult and often impossible to withdraw the eraser-bar from the case, resulting in considerable loss both in the eraserbar and the case which was not adapted to receive a second eraser.
In carrying my invention into practice it has been my desire to provide a case for containing and protecting the ordinary eraserbar and to allow of its gradual extension therefrom from time to time as the outer end becomes worn and finally to allow of the insertion of a new eraser when the first has been used; to this end I have constructed a case consisting of the parts 4. and 5 each of `which has two sides 6 and 7, a closed edge 8 or 9 and a closed end 10 or l1, the opposite ends being left open.
The part 4, or base-portion, of the case is of a size to receive and retain the eraser-bar 12 of the usual construction. Near the open `end of this part the edge 8 is bent inward to form an impinging tooth I3 and portions of the sides are concaved to form sockets 14, the 6o convex parts of which on the inner surfaces of the sides 4L tend to hold the eraser-bar.
The part 5, or sheath, into which the base 4L shuts, is pivoted at the closed end to the closed end of the base. This part has an impinging tooth l5 bent inward from the edge 9, and the sides 7-7 are furnished on their inner surfaces with convex-catches 16-16 which engage in the concavities 14 of the base and tend to hold the two parts together at 7o this end.
The eraser-bar l2 is securely held between the sides 6--6 of the base and is gripped by the impinging teeth 13 and 15. When the exposed portion becomes worn the parts of the case may be opened and the eraser moved along to expose a new portion until the whole bar has been used, when a new bar may be readily inserted.
Having thus described my invention, I 8o claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combinatioinin an eraser-case, of the base provided with the holding sockets, of the sheath pivoted to the base and provided with the convex catches and impinging tooth, all substantially as herein shown and dey, scribed.
2. The combination with the base 4 having the sides 6-6 furnished with concavities 9o l4-14E, the closed end l0 and the closed edge 8 having the impinging tooth 14: bent inward therefrom, of the sheath 5, pivoted to the base, having the sides 7-7 furnished with the catches l6-l6, the closed end 1I, and the 95 closed-edge 9 having the impinging tooth l5 bent inward therefrom, as and for the purpose described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
WILLIAM F. TORREY. Witnesses:
