SHAKING MECHANISM FOR GRATES.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,451, dated September 26, 1893.
Application filed April 25, 1893- Serial No. 471,795. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD FALEs, of Winthrop, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Shaking Mechanism for Grates, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawingsrepresenting like parts.
This invention has for its object to improve the construction of the shaking mechanism for grates, whereby one or more of the grated sections or bars may be bodily raised and lowered vertically, yet continually maintaining its horizontal position, in contra-distinction to being rocked or tilted as is now common.
In accordance with this invention the grated section to be raised and lowered is provided with depending arms from which project pins which move in stationary guideways provided for them, and a shaft is located beside said grated sections, in parallelism therewith, which is provided with short arms which are connected with the aforesaid pins loosely by suitable links, said shaft being adapted to be rotated by a detachable crank or otherwise. As the grated section or bar is raised bodily, the coal which rests upon it is carried up with it, and a portion of it thrown to each side, and as said section descends in advance of the coal the latter follows down and thereby the entire bed of coal is thoroughly disturbed.
My invention is particularly adapted to grates having pockets or depressed portions with grated bottoms, because in such event the shaking mechanism will be connected with the grated bottoms or portions of the said pockets, which may be raised into a plane with the remaining portions of the grate, and there held if desired while the bed of coal is being withdrawn, or the fire banked, or while new coal is being supplied, and in the latter event when said grated bottoms or portions are restored to their normal position,the new coal will follow and become covered by the live coals which tumble in at the sides.

The grate shown in Fig. 1, comprises the box or frame A, having grated portions a, a, extending transversely therein, in a plane substantially flush with the top of the frame, and having pockets on, a, arranged alter nately with relation to said grated portions a, a, and provided with grated bottoms b, b, yet so far as my invention is concerned such specific construction of grate is immaterial. The grated bottoms b, b, are raised and lowered bodily vertically by similarly constructed mechanism so the specific shaking mechanism for one only will be described.

By turning said shaft 0, in one or the other direction it will be seen that the grated bottom or section I) will be raised or lowered vertically, yet always maintaining its true horizontal position, and when in its elevated position will lie substantially flush with the grated tops a, a, or above them. If desired the crank 0 may be held in fixed position by a suitable catch with the grated section in its elevated position while supplying fresh coal. Thegrated section b may have small projections 1) upon its sides and ends to reduce the friction.
It is obvious that when several grated sections are employed and a reciprocating shaft for each section similarly located with relation to the section, that said shafts may be connected together and simultaneously opera-ted.
