CARTRIDGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,297, dated September 19, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WOLDEMAR HORST SAENGER, a subject of the Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar, residing at Augustusbad, near Radeberg, Kingdom of Saxony, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartridges, of which the following is a specification.
In order to obtain the best effect from shot when fired from a gun it is important to hold such shot closely together during the entire projecting of the charge from the firearm, so that the shot may not be scattered by the expansion of the gases after leaving the barrel but may travel bodily and in near proximity by the momentum given to such shot.
In carrying out my invention I make use of a shot holder of felt or similar material divided longitudinally into two halves and containing a conical chamber for the reception of the shot. This conical chamber is advantageously used with its apex toward the powder, so that the envelope may act as a wad between the powder and the shot, but the shotmay if desired be within the conical chamber adjacent to the powder, the apex of the chamber being toward the muzzle.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a section of the shot holder or envelope with the two halves thereof slightly parted. Fig. 2 represents the same as inserted within a cartridge case, and Fig. 3 is a section of the shot holder or envelope with the apex of the cavity toward the powder.
The envelope or shot holder is made of two parts which when set together are cylindrical externally and the cavity -is conical and formed within such sections. I have shown the sections A and B in Fig. 1 as cylindrical in the exterior and the conical cavity with a series of steps, but the interior or conical cavity may have plain sides, and when in use the shot holder may receive the shot with the largest end of the cavity adjacent to the powder space, as shown by dotted lines at C, or the shot holder may be placed in the opposite position, as indicated in Fig. 3.

I claim as my invention A shot cartridge having a holder for the shot of felt or other suitable material, divided longitudinally and having a conical shot receiving cavity on the inside and cylindrical on the outside, substantially as set forth.
