VENTILATED BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,250, dated September '19, 1893.
Application filed April 3, 1893I Serial No.468,888. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SANTINO P. PAIETTA, a cltizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of lilinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ventilated Beds, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a bed with means whereby the occupant may IO be fanned with air-currents while reposing. To this end I provide at an end of the bed, or other form of couch, preferably the headend, an air-pipe extending across it and which should be located just above the plane to I 5 which the pillows reach, the pipe being perforated or provided with a longitudinal series of outlets for air along the side facing the foot of the bed; and an air-pressure device, such as a bellows, having connected with it for operating it, a train of clock-wheels impelled by a spring or weight, or any analogous automatic operating means, supplies the air under pressure to the perforated pipe whence the currents emerge and fan the oocupant of the bed. As a desirable addition in my device, I also extend from the crosspipe referred to an adjustable perforated pipe adapted to be extended lengthwise of the bed from which to direct air-currents downward upon the occupant;
Referring to the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of a bed provided with my improvement; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
A is a bed, though it may be any other form of couch to which my improvement is applicable.
Extending across the head A of the bed is a perforated pipe B, with its line of perforations facing the foot-portion. The pipe B may serve as a rail forming a permanent part of the head A, or it may be a mere attachment thereon; and the position of the pipe should be such as to prevent it from being obstructed by the pillows, thus above the plane to which they extend, while it should be adequately low and so placed to cause the air-currents emerging from it to exert the desired fanning effect on the occupant of 5 the bed.
0 is an air-compressor, shown in the form of a double-acting bellows adapted to force air at each stroke of the rodrwhich connects it with its motor D; and the bellows communicates from its outlet, through a pipe (1 with the ventilating-pipe B.
As a motor, I show and prefer to employ a clock-work train of wheels D driven by a weight D adapted to be wound up to drive the wheels and actuate the bellows by connection therewith of the rod r through the medium of an eccentric connection thereof with the last wheel of the train; the driving mechanism being preferably incased and supported on the backof the head A.
B is a transverse extension of the pipe B, with which it is connected, near its longitudinal center, by a pivotal joint, the pipe B being formed in jointed sections, similar to a jointed gas-bracket for walls, with the perforations in the under sides of the sections, whereby it may be turned to extend at any desired length longitudinally of the bed and direct the air-currents down upon the occupant of the bed; and the pipe B should be provided with a valve 19 to control the supply of air to it.
As will be understood from the foregoing description of the apparatus, the motor D, when set in motion by winding up the weight D effects working of the bellows C, to force a supply of air under pressure into the ventilating pipe or pipes on the bed, whence the air-currents are blown over the occupant.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In combination with a bed, a ventilating apparatus comprising a pipe B extending transversely across the bed at one end thereof near the plane to which the pillows reach and having perforations in its side facing the opposite end of the bed, an extension B of the pipe B pivotally connected therewith near its center and formed in jointed sections having perforations in their under sides, whereby
