PUMP FOR PNEUMATIC TIRES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,853, dated September 12, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH VEITH, a subject of the King of Prussia, residing at Gelnhausen, Prussia, German Empire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pumps, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in Germany, September 24, 1892, No. 9,856; in England, provisional Patent No. 21,120, November 21, 1892, and in France December 19, 1892, which has notyet been numbered,) of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a central vertical section of my improved device, the piston being shown in full lines, with parts broken away. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional detail clearly showing the plunger head and mechanism connected therewith.
My invention relates to the construction of a device more particularly adapted to be used on cycles, and like vehicles, wherein pneumatic tires are used, and said invention consists, mainly, in constructing an air pump with a hollow plunger rod for containing the cementing, or other liquid, and with means for expelling said liquid.
Said invention consists also in the novel arrangement and combination of the parts hereinafter described and claimed. It frequently occurs that vehicles provided with pneumatic tires are disabled and rendered unfit for use by the tires being punctured, allowing them to collapse.
The object of my invention is to produce.
an efficient and reliable means for repairing the punctured tire, and inflating the same when required.
In the drawings b represents the cylinder of an air pump of any suitable construction, which is provided with a cap m,anda screwthreaded nozzle h, adapted to be closed by a screw-threaded plug f. Within this cylinder 17 is adapted to operate a hollow piston rod Ct, the central chamber of which forms a chamber a for the reception of a cementing or other liquid, there being sufficient space between said piston and the walls of the capm to allow of the admission of air within the cylinder 6, back of the piston head.

To the end of this piston rod that extends beyond the end of the cylinder b is attached a suitable handle Z so arranged as not to interfere with the opening Z communicating with chamber a, said opening being shown in Fig. 1, provided with a removable nozzle 6. It is here explained that the removable nozzle 6 and the plug f can be interchangeably used in the nozzle h of the pump cylinder, or in the opening Z in the piston rod, for purposes which will be hereinafter described.
When it is desired to put my device into use, say, for example, for cementing the puncture in the tire, it is necessary to loosen the nut c on the bolt at sufficiently to'allow air to enter the liquid chamber a; the plug 1'' is then fastened in the nozzle h to prevent the escape of air, and the removable nozzle e is fastened in the opening Z. The cylinder is then forced toward the nozzle e in the piston rod, While the latter is held stationary by the handle Z. The compression of air between the nozzle end of the cylinder and the piston and causes air to enter through the hollow bolt 01 to the liquid contained in the chamber a forcing the same, or as much thereof as is required, through the nozzle e.
After the puncture has been mended, and.
it is desired to inflate the tire, it is necessary to tighten up nut c to prevent the liquid from escaping through the bolt (1; fasten the plugfin the opening 1 and the nozzle e may, if desired, be fastened in the cylinder nozzle h when the device can be used as an air pump. It is obvious that there are many changes in detail that Imight make, without departing from the spirit of my invention, the main object being to provide a piston rod with a liquid containing chamber, and
, with cycles, and like vehicles, having pneumatic tires, it may be used for other purposes.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
the combination with an outer cylinder of a piston operating in said cylinder, the rod of said piston'having a liquid containing chamber therein, and means, substantially as described for forcing the liquid'therefrom, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

In a pump of the character described, the combination with an outer chamber of a piston operating therein, the rod of said piston having a liquid containing chamber in open communication with the exterior of the pump, means for closing said communication, and means substantially as described, for forcing the liquid from its containing chamber.
