MACHINE FOR SETTING LACING STUDS OR HOOKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,295, dated August 29, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD FREDERICK BARRY, of Newton Highlands, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Setting Lacing Studs or Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a machine for setting eyelet devices, such as lacing studs or hooks for shoes.
The object of the invention is to provide a hand stamping press constructed to accommodate interchangeable bed-plates and dies, whereby the machine may be used for punching out holes to receive the eyelets and converted into a machine for setting either studs or hooks.
To this end the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which illustrate a construction by which the invention may be carried out, Figure 1 shows a side elevation of the stamping press. Fig. 2 shows a front elevation. Fig. 3 shows a section on line 33 of Fig. 2, illustrating the operation of the machine when adapted for attaching lacing hooks; Fig. 4 a similar section illustrating the adaptation of the machine for attaching lacing studs; Fig. 5 a sectional view illustrating the machine adapted for punching holes to receive the eyelets. Figs. 6 and 7 show details of different forms of bed-plates.
The reference letter, a, designates a frame, which is formed with a horizontal bed, a, having a recess, a opening out of its top and rear sides. The frame has ahead, 9, standing over the said bed, and provided with a bore, 1), in which fits a plunger, 12*, and a retracting spring, 19 around said plunger. The plunger is actuated by means of a cam lever, c, pivoted to the head, I), and engaging the top of the plunger. The plunger, 12 has ascrew threaded socket, d, which is adapted to receive interchangeable dies, one of which, (1, is a circular punch for cutting holes in the Serial No. 468,320. (No model.)

The bed, a, is adapted to receive inter changeable bed-plates to correspond with the dies. When the punch, d, is used, a soft metal bed-plate, e, having a block, 6, is fastened on the bed, a, and the block fills the recess, a and constitutes a bed to receive th impact of the punch.

The hook of the stud having a thick shank, a notch, c f, of considerable depth is made in the plate, 6 to receive the shank of the hook and allow the eyelet portion of the stud to take position under the die.
