(No Model.) v
P. BURGROPP. LIPTING DEVICE FOR SEEP BINDING HARVESTEES.
Patented Aug. 15, 1893.
wizwzssfis o6,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK BURGROFF, OF ELDORADO, WISCONSIN.
LIFTING DEVICE FOR SELF-BINDING HARVESTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,526, dated August 15, 1893.
Application filed March 28, 1893.
To all whom it may concern.-
' Be it known that I, FRANK BURGROFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eldorado, in the county of Fond du Lac, State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting Devices for Self- Binding Harvesters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in lifting devices for self binders or harvesting machines.
The invention will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the main wheel of an ordinary harvester, mounted on the frame work and provided with my improved lifting device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the lifting device alone. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section through the center of the device.
Referring to the drawings, A is the main wheel and B the main frame constructed as usual. To the main frame is bolted a vertical segmental slide-way 0, consisting of an outer segment 1, an inner segment 2 which is grooved on its inner edge at 3, and connecting braces 4, one at the upper and one at the lower end of the slide-way. On each side of segments 1 and 2, are secured segment plates 5 which project inward as shown, thereby forming a channel in which moves a segmental-cross-head D,provided with a central segmental opening 6 extending from near the upper end down to the lower end of the crosshead. In this opening is a boxing E, forming the journal for the main shaft and provided with side flanges '7, arranged to extend over the sides d of the cross-head D, thus retaining the boxing in place and at the same time permitting it to move up and down in the opening 6 in the cross head.
F are helical springs secured to the crosshead and to the upper end of the boxing, the upper end of these springs bearing against an enlargement d of the cross head D. These springs carry the weight of the main Serial No. 467,995. (No model.)
frame with its load and prevent the jarring of the harvesting machinery, thus avoiding the wear and tear that are usual in those machines not hung on springs.
To limit the downward movement of the boxing in the segmental opening, a stop G is located in the opening at its lower end, this stop being provided with side flanges 8 constructed in the same manner and for the same purpose as the flanges 7 on the boxing E. The lower end of the stop G, is provided with legs 9 which serve as guide pieces and abut against a bolt H, passing through the lower end of the cross-head. By removing this bolt, the stop G and boxing E may be slid out from the cross head for the purpose of repairs, &c.
To prevent the cross-head from being forced upward entirely out of the slide-way O, a cable K, preferably of wire rope, is attached to the top end of the cross-head at 10, passing thence downward between the inner edge of segment 2 and the outer edge of the crosshead; the segment 2 being grooved at 3 and the cross-head also grooved at 11 to receive the cable. The cable passes outward under a pulley L, and thence over a segment M, operated by a lever N, provided with the usual ratchet O and pawl P.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description, that by means of the lever N, the cable K may be pulled to raise the main frame or slacked off to lower it. The raising and lowering of the main frame serve to tilt it at different angles, as will be fully understood by those skilled in the art.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a lifting device for harvesters, the combination, with a main frame, a segmental slide way rigidly secured to the main frame, a segmental cross-head movable in the slide way and provided with a central opening, a boxing movable in the central opening, and a main axle journaled in the boxing, of a series of springs between the upper end of the boxing and the upper end of the cross-head, a cable attached to the upper end of the cross head, and a pulley journaled near the lower end of the slide way, under which pulley the cable passes, substantially as described.
2. In a lifting-device for harvesting Inachines, the combination, with a main frame,
a segmental slide-way secured to the main frame and provided with an inner groove, a
5 segmental cross-head having an outer groove and a central opening extending from the lower end to near the upper end of the crosshead, said cross-head being movable in the slide-way, a boxing movable in the central opening, a main axle journaled in the boxing, a series of springs between the upper end of the boxing and the upper end of the crosshead, a stop located in the slide-way below the boxing, a bolt across the lower end of the cross-head and closing the central opening, a cable secured to the top end of the cross-head and passing down the grooves in the slideway and cross-head, a pulley j ournaled in the lower end of the slide-way under which the cable passes, and means for operating the cable, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
FRANK BURGROFF. Witnesses:
J on AUSTIN, WINTHROP SCRIBNER.
