H. D. GLAYTON. REGISTER FOR PRINTING PRBssBs. No. 503,452.

Jm. BY KWW W/ TIVE SSS:
A TTOHNEYS.
UNiTE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERBERT D. OLAYTON, OF HILL CITY, KANSAS.
REGISTER FOR PRINTING-PRESSES.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 503,452, dated August 15, 1893.
Application filed March 15, 1893.
T0 all whom it may conccrn:
Be it known that I, HERBERT D. CLAYTON, of Hill City, in the county of Graham and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Attachment for Printing-Presses, of which he following is a full, clear, and exact descripion.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of counting' attachments for printing presses which are adapted to work automatically and to register each impression of the press. i
The object of my invention is to provide means for attachinga counter to a press in such a Way that it may be easily thrown into operative position, easily tilted back out of the way, and will operate only when the press is actnally printing; that is, it will not operate when the throw-ofi of the press is used.
To these ends my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the Views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the counter provided with my improved attachments. Fig. 2 is abroken plan view of the same, showing a supporting standard in side elevation; and Fig. 3 shows my improved means of attaching the counter to the press.
The counter 10 is of a common well known kind, having the usual holes 11 in which the numbers on the registerin g Wheels appear and the knobs 12 by which the Wheels are set and regulated, but the counter is not shown in detail as its construction forms no part of this invention. The counter is operated by a lever 13 which swings in the usual way, but in this case the lever is shaped to conform with the other features of this invention. The lever hangs down at a slight inclination to the bottom of the case, is bent upward at one end of the case, as shown at 14, is then bent laterally, as shown at 15, and finally enters a slot 16 at one end of the case through which slot it swings, the lever having its inner end pivoted within the case, as shown at 17. The connections between the lever and the registering Wheels are not shown, as these are of Serial No. 166,018. (llo model.)
exactly the usual kind. On the top or back ot the case 10 is a plate 18 having parallel projecting lugs 19 thereon which are pivoted to the upper end of a standard 20, this being sccured as shown at 21, to one side of the frame of the press 22, thus enabling the counter with its lever to be swung into or out of operative position. The standard extends upward to a point near the path of the platen of the press, so that when the case 10 is swung forward, as shown in Fig. 3, the lever 13 will extend into the path of a finger or pin 23 on the platen 24 of the press, but if the counter is not to be used it may be tipped over to the back side of the standard 20 and out of the path of the finger 23.
It Will be seen that when in the position shown in Fig. 3, the lever of the counter will be struck by the finger 23 at each upward movement of the platen and the counter operated, as the finger forms practically part of the platen. VVhen the throw-off is used, the platen does not quite touch the type, and the finger and lever are adjusted in relation to each other so that in such a case the two will not come in contact and the counter will not operate.
In that class of machines having a throw-off handle which moves at the side of the platen, a finger may be attached to the handle and will operate the lever 13, except when the throw-off handle is pulled out, or the finger may be attached in any convenient Way to the platen or to any mechanism carried by the platen without effecting the principle of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-y 1. The combination, with the printing press, of a counter hinged to a fixed portion of the press, and having` an Operating lever extend ing into the path of a movable portion of the press which moves in unison with the platen, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the printing press having a swinging platen, of a counter hinged to the press and provided with an Operating lever, and a contact fin ger carried by the platen and adapted to strike the lever of the counter, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the printing` press ICO having a swinging platen, of a standard seeured to one side of the press, a counter hing'ed to the standard and provided with an opernting lever, and a finger carried by the platen and adapted to strike the level1 of the counter, substantialiy as desei'ibed.
4. The combination with a printing press, of a counter hinged to the press and having' an Operating' level' extending into the path of n [o inovabie poi'tion of the press, which lnovesin nnison with the piaten, the Operating level' being inovable with the counter When the lattei' is swnng on its hinge, to throw the said counter out of 01' into opei'ative p0siti0n,sub stantiaily as deseribed.
HERBERT D. CLAYTON.
