SPRING-BACK FOR VEHICLE-SEATS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,319, dated August 15, 1893.

Application filed December 24, 1892- Serial No. 456,262- (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRISON E. IIERRICK, of Merrimac, in the county of IIillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Attachments for Carriage-Backs, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has relation to the backs of seats of wagons and other vehicles; and it has for its object the provision of means whereby the back of the seat may be made to yield when subjected to undue pressure thereagainst by the occupant, as when the wheels of the vehicle strike a water-bar or pitch-hole in the road, or when the horse starts quickly or springs forward suddenly as is sometimes the case when touched with a whip or urged by the manipulation of the reins or otherwise.

To these ends the invention consists of the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.

Reference is to be had to the annexed drawings, and to the letters marked thereon, the same letters designating the same parts or features, as the case may be, wherever they occur.

Of the drawings---Figure 1 is a front view of my improved seat back free from upholstering. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, the upholstering being represented in dotted lines.

In the drawings a designates the seat.

12 is the base or support and cl is the back. The latter without upholstering may consist of a plain board or piece of any desired width.

0 is an oscillatory rod arranged in suitable bearings cl secured to the back I). The rod 0 is arranged longitudinally of the seat back, and the outer end of said rod projecting beyond the end of the back is formed into or provided with a crank e, to the free end of which is pivoted the rear end of the seat-arm f, the forward end of said arm being pivoted upon a boss or projection g of the seat-ham dle h.

on is a spring coiled around the oscillatory rod 0 and having one end secured to the bearing 1), or, it might be, the seat back, and the other end attached to the collar n which, in turn, is rigidly secured to the oscillatory rod. The said spring operates torsionally upon the said rod, and with a tendency to move the back of the seat forward, as will be readily understood without further description. The collar n is provided with a projection 0 serving as a stop, which is adapted when the back of the seatis moved forward by the operation of the said spring to come into contact with a stop 19 formed upon one of the bearings (Z, and so limit the extent of the forward move ment of the seat back.

The forward face of the seat back may be cushioned and upholstered, as at q, in any suit able way.

With this invention a seat-back for vehicles is provided which is soft and yielding in character and which obviates all harmful and disagreeable jar and jolt to the occupant of the vehicle, arising from any cause.

It will be observed that the contrivanee is very simple in construction, easy of manufacture and ready of application. It will also be noted that changes may be made in the form and arrangement of parts comprising the invention, to adapt it to meet special circumstances or tastes, without departing from the nature or spirit of the invention.

I claim- A back for vehicle seats comprising in its construction pivotal supports, a rock rod provided with a crank having bearings in the back, a spring for exerting torsional strain upon said rod, and the seat arm pivotally connected with said crank and the seat, as set forth.
