CAR-COUPLING.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN Mac'HENHEIMER, Sr., of Nauvoo, Hancock county, Illinois, have made a new and useful Imp'rovement in Car ling pin, and partly in the means for supporting the link, substantially as is hereinafter set forth and claimed, aided by the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a car-coupling constructedaccordingto the principle of the improvement, the draw heads being apart from each other but as about to be closed together; Fig. 2 a plan of the parts as in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a view similar to that of Fig. 1, but showing the draw headsclosed together and coupled; Fig. 4 a vertical cross section on the line 44 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 a vertical cross section, looking toward the left hand direction, upon the line 55 of Fig. 1.

A and A represent the opposing drawheads. Thedraw-heads, as well as the coupling pins B, B, and the coupling link 0, are of the usual construction saving as modified or supplemented by the improvement under consideration.
D represents a device with which each drawhead is equipped, for upholding the link in a proper position to enable it to enter the opposing draw-head. It is adjustable so thatit can beset out from the mouth of the draw head sufficiently to sustain the link in the described position, and to be moved inward to be out ofthe way when the draw heads are being coupled. Its preferable form is shown, namely a rod shaped in the form of an elongated loop whose sides (1, d, are held and adapted to be moved longitudinally in bearings a, a, in the draw-head, and whose end,

outward is shown'in the left hand portion of Figs. 1 and 2, and its position when withdrawn is shown in the right hand portion of Figs. 1 and 2,and also in Fig. 3. The draw-head is recessed at a to receive the outer end of the-link support when in its withdrawn position.
E represents a stop for limiting the outward movement of the link-support. The support is adapted to be operated by means of ties F, F, which are connected with the support and lead thence to or toward the sides respectively of the canto enable the support to be adjusted by any one at the side of the car; The ties in question are connected with the end bar or portion d of the support and lead thence around a bearingG which is attached to some suitable fixture such as the draw head, and thence in any suitable manner to or toward the sides of the car-body. This last named part is not shown, as its construction is well understood, and its construction is not modified saving that it may be provided with any suitable support for the be operated by means of a pair of ties H, H,
as follows: these ties lead respectively from the sides of the car to a bearing above the coupling-pins and thence downward to connect with the pins, and so that by drawing either of the ties the coupling pin can be ele vated sufficiently to be free of the link. The bearing, 1, is of any suitable nature for sustaining the ties for the purpose in question. In the present instance it is in the form of an eye sustained by a standard, 1', which in turn is supported by the draw-head. The standard rises perpendicularly and the eye projects horizontally above the link substan- ICO tially as shown. The eye is at such a level as to cause the upper end of the pin to encounter it before the lower end of the pin has cleared the draw-head. The eye therefore acts as a stop to prevent the pin from becoming detached from the draw-head. The ties H, H, below the bearing I, are preferably consolidated in the form of a single tie, 11*, substantially as shown.
In operation, the operator, from the side of the car at which he chances to be, draws the tie, F or F, and thereby causes the link support to be set out in position to sustain the link; this position is shown in connection with the draw-head A, Figs. 1 and 2. Then as the opposing draw-head, A, approaches he by means of the tie I-I raises the pin in that draw-head sufficiently for the link to enter; this position is illustrated in the drawhead A, Figs. 1 and 2. The draw-heads can now close, and on coming together the link enters the draw-head A, and the link support D is, by reason of the drawhead A encountering it, thrust backward out of the Way and into its position of Fig. 3. I claim-*- 1. In a car-coupling, the combination of the draw-head, thelongitudinally adjustable linksupport, the bearing upon the draw-head, and the flexible ties leading from the linksupport around said bearing, substantially as described.
2. In a car-coupling the combination of the draw-head, the longitudinallyadj ustable linksupport, the stop for limiting the outward movement of the link-support, the bearing upon the draw-head, and the ties leading from said link-support around said bearing, substantially as described.
3. In a car-coupling, the combination of the draw-heads, A and A, the coupling pins, the bearings respectively abovesaid pins, the ties leading past said bearings to said pins respectively, the adjustable link supports, the bearings upon said draw-heads respectively and the ties respectively leading from said link supports and around said bearings respectively, substantially as described.
