lington, county of Racine, and State of Wiscousin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Reapers, of which the following is a specification, the same being a division of an application'filed by me on the 25th day of 7 May, 1886, Serial No. 203,258.
The main objects of my invention are first the adjustment of the reel up or down and forward or back bya single lever, and second to drive said reel by mechanism arranged to accommodate itself to said adjustment.
It consists essentially of a vertical and laterally adjustable reel support, of a telescoping driving shaft having a universal joint connection with said reel and the actuating mechanism.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is a plan view of so much of the machine as is necessary to show the reel driving and adj usting mechanism. Fig. 2, is an elevation viewed from the stubble side of the machine. Fig. 3, is a detail view on an enlarged scale of a portion of the reel support. t
T represents the frame of the machine mounted in the usual way and supported at opposite ends upon the main wheel N and the divider wheel R.
A is the reel of the ordinary or any suitable form and construction, provided with the j ournal a.
B is the reel standard preferably formed of tubular iron bent at right angles at each end in the same direction into horizontal arms and pivoted at the lower end to the frame '1 or to any convenient part of the machine by means of brackets or boxes I), b, so as to swing in a vertical plane at right angles to the length of the machine. The upper horizontal arm of said standard B supports and forms abearing for the sleeve C of the oblique arm C at the opposite end of which is formed a parallel sleeve C to receive and furnish a bearing for the reel journal at. The sleeve Cis provided with an ear 0, to which is bolted the actuating lever E. By forming three or more bolt holes in said ear 0, the inclination of the lever may be changed with reference to the arm C. Upon said upper arm of standard B, adjacent to lever E, is mounted hub f of the toothed secfor F, which is provided with a loop f, and lug f. Abrace D is pivoted at its lower end to the frame T, or to some convenient part of the machine, and notched on its upper edge adjacent to said sector to engage with loop f, passing through said loop f over the hub f and under the lug f, and thereby braces and secures the standard 13 in any desired position. The standard B is retained in its bearings b, b, and the sleeve C and sector F upon its upper horizontal arm by the rod b, connecting, and secured in, the ends of the horizontal arms of said standard 13. The lever E is provided with a spring actuated catch 6, connected by the rod 6 with the handle e pivoted to said lever by means of which the arm C may be swung about the upper arm or standard B and the reel raised or lowered, advanced or withdrawn, and secured in any desired position. The weight of the reel A, transmitted through the catch e to sector F, retains the front or lower edge of loop fin engagement with the notches in brace D. Without withdrawing catch e from engagement with the sector F, the latter may be disengaged from the notched brace l) by depressing lever E sufficient to overcome the weight of the reel, which may then be advanced or withdrawn by simply carrying said lever and standard B forward or back. When the catch 6 is unlocked the sector F drops by its own weight out of engagement with thenotches in brace D, and the reel may be both raised or lowered and advanced or Withdrawn at the same time by one hand grasping said lever.
Q is the crank disk provided with the crank pin q, and driven from the main driving gear 0 through the intermediate pinion 0 and beveled gear P, p, in the usual way.
In a bracket K secured to frame T are formed bearings for the intermeshing worm I and worm wheel H. The wormI is provided with a crank arm 2', which is connected with and operated by the same crank pin g which actuates the sickle.
To the inner end of the journal of worm gear H is coupled by a universal joint G, a shaft g, and to the outer end of the reel journal at, is coupled, by a similar joint G, a square rod 9 which telescopes into asimilarly shaped socket in shaft 9. A self-adjusting connection is thus established between the driving mechanism and the reel A, the position of which may be changed, as before described, without interfering with its rotation. It is obvious that the same advantages will be attain ed by the use of the adjustable reel support and jointed telescoping driving rod whatever means may be employed for rotating said rod.
Theconveyer mechanism shown in the drawings is not claimed herein, but forms the subject of a prior application filed May 25, 1886, Serial No. 203,258, of which the present case is a division.
What I claim is 1. The combination in a reaper of a reel standard hinged at its lower end to the machine, and sustaining at its upper end the adjustable reel bearing, a brace also hinged at its lower end to the machine, a locking device adjustably connecting the brace with the standard, and asingle lever serving to adjust the reel bearing and also to inclose the brace locking device. 2. The combination in a reaper, of a reel supporting standard hinged at the lower end to the machine, a brace also hinged to the machine at the lower end and notched at its upper end, a notched sector mounted upon the upper end of said standard and provided with a slot or loop to receive and engage with the notched end of said brace, an arm hinged or pivoted to the upper end of said standard and provided with a bearing for the reel journal,
and a lever arranged to swing said standard and arm about their bearings and provided with a catch working with said sector, substantially as and,for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination in a reaper of a standard provided at the ends with right angled arms, the lower one of which is journaled in bearings formed on or attached to the machine frame, a reel supporting arm provided with transverse sleeves or boxes, one of which is supported and turns upon the upper arm of said standard, while the other supports and furnishes a bearing for the reel j ournal,a brace hinged at the lower end to the machine, alocke ing device adjustably securing the upper end of said brace to the upper end of said standard, and a single lever attached to said reel supporting arm and connected with said looking device, whereby the reel is moved forward and backward and up or down and said looking device operated, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. The combination in a reaper, of a reel A, driving shaft g, g, crank disk Q carrying crank pin q, worm wheel H, and worm I provided with crank 2' connected with said crank pin q, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. r In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand, this 22d day of February, 1893, in the presence of two attesting witnesses.
