VIRGIL DRAPER, OF NORTH ATTLEBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO OSCAR M. DRAPER, OF SAME PLACE.
DEVICE FOR SWAGING CHAIN-LINKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 50.200, dated September 26, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VIRGIL DRAPER, of North Attleborough, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Mechanism for Swaging Chain- Links; and I do hereby declare the sameto be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawin gs, of which- Figure 1. denotes a top view, Fig. 2 a longitudinal and vertical section, and Fig. 3 a transverse and vertical seetion,of my said invention.
The object of the said machine is to swage a round or other shaped link into one of a square or rectangular form, as shown in Fig.4.
The first part of the invention consists of a bed-die, A, which is suitably supported within a frame, B. This bed -die has a chan nel or groove, a, extending across its upper face, and serves to receive and guide two end dies or compressors, O G, which are laid within the said groove. Each of the said compressors is to be so applied to the inner end of one or two male screws, E E, as to advance or recede with such screw, but not revolve with it. These screws extend horizontally through and are screwed into two standards, b b, of or making part of the frame B, and each screw has a handle or crank, 0, applied to it to enableit to be easily revolved and with sufficient force to contract the link in longitudinal directions. An upper die or punch, F, is employed over the bed-die A, the lower or working end of such punch being made with achannel to fit the link. Furthermore, with the afore-described parts there is employed a link holder and former, G, which is a rod or barof metal havingaprismatic projection, d, of steel. This projection is quadrilateral. It, when used, is to be inserted within the link, to which it is to fit closely, and its transverse section is to correspond with that of the interior space of the link when the said link may he swaged. It also serves to hold the link between the dies and the punch.
In using the said mechanism, afteralink may have been placed in the bed-die the compress ing-dies are to be screwed up against thelink, and the punch is to be driven down upon it until the link may have been reduced to the form desired. If desirable, the dies and punch may be chased or engraved, so to produce a figured or ornamental surface on the edges of the link.
I claim The combination or mechanism, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth, the same consisting of the beddie, the compressors, the punch, and the ring holder and former, the whole being arranged as specified.
