TONGUE SUPPORT. No. 501,466. Patented July 11, 1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR M. MOSHER, OF GLIDDEN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO MYRON W. BEACH, OF CARROLL COUNTY, IOWA.
TONG u E-SU PPO'RT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,466, dated July 11, 1893.
Application filed February 17, 1893. Serial No.462,'783- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR M. MOSHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glidden, in the county of Carroll and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices forSupporting the Tongues of Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for supporting the tongues of vehicles, and it has for its object to provide a device at a minimum expense which will be very effective for the purpose designed, and which may be applied to any and all draft poles or tongues, and be manipulated from the outer end to effect an engagement of the sustaining devices with" the axle of the vehicle.
Other objects and advantages will appear from the following description and claims when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a side elevation of a vehicle tongue with my improvements applied and illustrating an axlein section and attached to one wheel. Fig. 2, is a perspective view of my improved device removed from the tongue, and Fig. 3, is aperspective view of the stirrup.
Referring by letter to said drawings: A, indicates the front axle of a Vehicle, and B, indicates a tongue, both of which may be of any ordinary or approved construction. This tongue is provided on its under side throughout its length and at suitable intervals with depending guide eyes a, to receive a rod 1). This rod is turned at its outer end which assumes a position near the outer end of the tongue, with a curved portion 0, for conveniently grasping the rod, and the opposite or inner end of the rod is provided with a hook d.
0, indicates an approximately U-shaped plate, which may be formed from steel or other suitable material, and the free ends of its legs e are designed to take under the axle A, when supporting the tongue horizontally. The connecting portion or forward end of this plate is provided with a hole f, to receive theinner hooked end d, of the rod b.
D, indicates a stirrup. This stirrup is of a form substantially as shown in Fig. 3, of the drawings having the upwardly directed loop g, and the lateral branches h, at its terminal ends. This stirrup is designed to be placed over the tongue so as to straddle the same near its inner end and the lateral branches h, are designed to take under the legs or branches e, of the plate 0.
By the construction described it will be seen that my improvements are not secured to the axle of a vehicle, but that the plate 0, bears against the under side of the axle so that the parts are not liable to become broken and can be used upon any tongue by simply providing the guide eyes on the under side thereof.
In operation the stirrup is placed over the tongue as described and being free thereon may be moved to any desired point along the length of the tongue. The plate 0, has its branches bearing upon the lateral branches of the stirrup and by means of the slide rod 1), the legs of the plate may be projected to any desired distance beyond the inner end of the tongue, or they may be drawn in upon the tongue so as to entirely disengage the axle.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- The combination with a vehicle tongue having the guide eyes on its under side; of the rod arranged in said eyes and having a hook at its inner end, the approximately U shaped plate connected with the hooked end of said rod so as to be moved thereby, and the stirrup straddling the tongue and having lateral branches to engage the under side of said plate, all adapted to operate, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
' OSCAR M. MOSHER.
