The improved boiler feederis provided with a filling receptacle A, adapted to contain the water to be discharged into the boiler. The bottom of the receptacle A is connected by a pipe B, with the water compartment of the boiler C and is provided with a valve D to connect or disconnect the said receptacle with or from'the boiler whenever desired.
Into the receptacle A, extends, to within a short distance from the bottom, the pipe E, containing in its lower end a valve E', and extending upward through the top of the receptacle A, to connect with the reservoir or tank F, for su pplyingthe receptacle A, at intervals, with water for charging the boiler. The upper end of the receptacle A, is also connected by a pipe G, containing a valve G', with a regulator H, providedwith asteam inlet pipe I, containing a cock or valve I' and extend- Aing into the steam compartment of the boiler C. The pipe I is arranged in line with the normal maximum level of the Water in the said boiler O, so that steam can pass from the boiler'into the regulator H, from the latter through the pipe G, past the valve G', into the receptacle A, to cause the water therein to low through the pipe B, into the boiler, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the receptacle A, is arranged a float J, carrying an upwardly extending rack J', in mesh with a gear wheel K', forming part of a registering mechanism K, of any approved l construction, and arranged in such a manner that the movement of the iioat J, registers the quantity of water discharged into the boiler from the said receptacle A. The top of the float J, is adapted to engage a lever L', piv oted in the upper end of the receptacle A, and supporting a valve L, adapted Vto open and close the lower end of a pipe N, connecting the receptacle A with the tank F,Yas shown. The under side of the iioat J, is adapted to engage and operate a lever or arm O connected by the rods O and O2, with a'lever O3, supporting a valve O4 adapted .to open and close a whistle O5, for sounding an alarm in case the water in the receptacle A, falls toan extrem ely low and dangerous level.
The regulator H contains, in its bottom,a spring pressed valve P, leading toa gradu-V ally increasing outlet P', controlled by a valve P2, held on a screw rod P3, for adjusting thei cle Q, is forced back tovthe'tank F'by the pressure of. steam coming through an extension G2 of the pipe G, leading from the regulator H to the top of the said receptacle A, as above described.
IOO
ln the lower part of the casing of the regu'- lator His arranged loosely a float R, carrying a hollow stem R', engaging by a pin a segmental slot S in a sector shaped weighted arm S secured cna shaft T, extending transversely and mounted to turn on centers held in the casing of the regulator II, as plainly illustrated in Figs. 10, l1 and l2. On the weighted arm S are arranged lugs S2 and S3 adapted to engage alternately opposite sides of a projection T formed on the rear face of a weighted arm T3 mounted to turn loosely on the shaft T. On this arm T3 opposite the projection T and above shaft T is pivoted the valve U fitted to slide in suitable bearings in the regulator casin g. The valve U is arranged in line with the pipe I, and its outer free end is adapted to close or open the mouth of the said pipe I, so that the steam supply for the regulator can be shut off at the time the valve U is seated on the end of the said pipe I. The latter is provided outside of the regulator H with the valve I for permanently shutting ol steam from the regulator whenever` desired.
On the rear face of the weighted arm T3 is arranged a lug T2 adapted to be engaged by a hook U', formed on a spring pressed lever U2 pivoted in the casing. On the front face of the arm T3 are arranged two lugs T4 and T5 between which passes the valve stem of the valve U, and which serve to limit the up and down swinging motion of the arm T3.
On the front face of the arm S is arranged a short pin S" adapted to engage a curved projection on the lever U2 so that when the arm S swings to the right, the said pin Stcomes in contact with andpresses on the said curved projection to swing the lever U2 outward out of engagement with thelug T2 to free the arm T3 and to permit the latter to swing downward as hereinafter more fully described.
The operation is as follows:--Af ter a certain quantity of water has been injected into the boil`er,the valves L,E and I), are held on their seats by the pressure of steam passing through the pipe I into the regulator I-l, and passing from thelatter through the pipe G into the receptacle A. The valves D and G and the valve U, are held open, the latter by the action of the weighted arm S, the valve D by the pressure of the water in the receptacle A,
and the valve G by the pressure of the steam passing through the pipe G from the regula- -tor H into the receptacle A. The float J, is at this time descending, and the rst wheel K of the registering apparatus K, is disengaged from the indicating wheels. The float R is then in its lowermost position. Then a feeding or injection is being finished the steam the mouth of the valve tube I and will enter the same and pass into the casing ot' the regulator I-I, not only on account of the rise of the level in the boiler, but more particularly on account of the reduction of pressure produced in the said regulator H and receptacle A as soon as the steam is prevented from passing from the boiler to take the place of that which is constantly condensed in the said regulator and receptacle. When the water from the boiler enters the regulator H the float R therein begins to be submerged and consequently acquires an ascending force, and when this is sufficient to counterbalance the Weight of the arm S and the friction of theworking parts connected therewith, it will begin to rise, causing the said arm S to describe an angle of sixty degrees. At this time the center of gravity of the arm S will pass to the other side of the vertical line which passes through the center of the shaft T, and the said arm will fall suddenly to the opposite side, the segmental slot S permitting such movement, which extends through an angle of sixty degrees.- Before this movement of the arm S, however, is finished, the lug S3 has moved the hook U toward the outside and the weighted arm T3 can fall freely, and as it carries the valve U with it, the latter will close the mouth of the pipe I as the weighted arm T3 isso calculated that its force will be equal to the force of the steam at its maximum pressure on the valve U. As the arm S has moved sixty degrees -isixty degrees, that is one hundred and twenty degrees, and as the space left by the two lugsS2 and S2 is not more than about one hundred and ve degrees, it is clear that as the lug S2 rests on the projection T it causes the latter to move fifteen degrees, which is necessary so that the valve U may reach its seat and be held thereon. way communication with the boiler and regulator II is cut off. The reduction of pressure which constantly takes place in the regulator H and the receptacle A, as already described, produces a retrogression in the water which passes from the receptacle A to the boiler C by means of the tube B, and this retrogression closes the valve D automatically. Thus, we have the apparatus entirely cut otf from the boiler, the apparatus still containing some water and steam at nearly the same pressure as that in the boiler. The pressure of this steam diminishes progressively be cause it has lost heat by radiation, and a time will come in which this pressure will be overcome in the discharge valve L by the weight of the lever L. Then all the steam and the air contained in the apparatus will escape by the said valve and tube into the atmosphere and then the weight of the water in the tank F `will open the valve E and the receptacle A will begin to fill. In consequence of this the fioat J will rise and its rack will actuate the recording apparatus K so as to record the amount of water which enters the receptacle A. But as part of this water passes out later from the regulator II by means of the tube P', the end of the lever L is so arranged that it will move down suiiciently to prevent the rise of the float J before a volume of water equal to that which afterward passes out at IOO In this the tube P enters the receptacle A. l In this manner the vrecording apparatus K is also stopped and its first wheel K is thrown out of mesh with the otherswhen' the float moves down'so that the result is that onlyV the volume of water which is injected' into the boiler and which is to be converted into steam therein will be recorded. The receptacle A is now filled with water from the tank F, the fioat J is at its highest point, and the lever L rises and closes the valve L so that the receptacle A remains filled with water wi'th'all its valves closed and at rest.` In the meantime the several devices in the regulator H' are'at work in the 'following manner: From theV moment when the discharge valve L was opened and atmospheric pressu rewas thereby established in the interior of the apparatus, the spring for the valve P caused the latter to open, and as the rod P2 had previously been placed by the operator in the proper position to'leavea certain sized outlet in the tube'P, the water from the regulator H will runout through the tube P and accumulatein the eXhauster 112,01- is allowed to run off as desired. The time for the duration of this discharge of the water from the regulator H is so regulated that'the level of the water in the boiler will' not fall more than necessary. The outflow of the water from the regulator H causes the emersion of the fioat R which will pull more and lnore on the arm S and finally a'time will come when this pull wll'be sufficient to'draw the arm S to the right and cause it to describe an angle of sixty degrees, 'so thatitscenter of gravity will finally pass to the right of the vertical line and then the arm willfall 'suddenly to this side, therebydescribing another sixty degrees permitted by the segmentalslot S. From the time that the arm S began to move the valve U'rernained fxed'on its-seat, held there only by the weight of the'arm T3 which is sufcient for the purpose. The pin S3 finally leaves the hook O so as to be free to be acted on by its spring, and finallywhile describing the last fifteen' degrees, the corresponding lug S2 abuts on the projection T and thereby causes the arm T310 turn so that the valve U is forced open. At this -movement the steam from the boiler will pass'to the regulator and fill it and at the same timev close the valve P and press the valves E and L firmly against their seats. The pressure in the apparatus' and that in the boiler thus becomes equalized and the water from theV receptacle A will run by gravity from the receptacle to the boiler, automatically opening in its discharge the valve D and' filling the said boiler up to the entrance kof the tube'I, at which time the water will pass through the tube I into the regulator H to acton the several parts therein, as above described. As the operator can regulate the time that the condensations of steam inthe apparatus will last, as this will always be less Vthe greater the weight of the lever L is, and as theoperator can alsoregulate the time that the 'discharge of the water through the tube P will consume-\vhich time is always the same between `two successive injections-*the apparatus can be so set that during the ordinary operation 'of the device the lioat J will not fall to the bottom of the receptacle A. But if on account of a great waste of .steam or the escape of water, the Water in the boiler should fall more than has been provided for, then the receptacle A will be completely emptied and thewhole' weight of the float J will bear on the lever O, so that the valve O'4 will, without fail, open, whereby the alarm whistle is sounded, thus warning the engineer he can now reestablish' the normal condition. Thisis easily done, as'for this purpose the operator closes the `valve I by hand and-opens the tube P wide, and by means of the weighted lever shown in Fig. 3,0'pens thedischarge valve'L.
In 'this manner the time for the condensation of the steam is reduced to an instant, and the outflow of 'water by the tube P to considerable less time. In this short time the receptacle A has filled and now on opening the valve I, the steam will cause a new injection of 'water in the manner above described. A repetition of the preceding operation by the operator will be sufficient to feed the boiler. When the alarm is produced by a change of consumption of the'water iu the boiler, then it is'o'nl y necessary to regulate the outflow of the water in the tube P' after the level of the water-in the boiler has been re-established, so that all continuesin the normal way above described.'
