UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMAN T. REGNELL, JAMES A. BIGNEY, ND CHARLES 0. SWEET, OF
ATTLEBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS.
JEWELRY AND METHOD OF MAKING SAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,232, dated July 11, 1893.
Application filed April 17, 1893. Serial No. 470,732. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HERMAN T. REGNELL, JAMES A. BIGNEY, and OHAELEs 0. SWEET, all of Attleborough, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Articles of Jewelry and in Methods of Manufacturing the Same; and we hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in articles of jewelry of a floral nature and in the method of their manufacture.
One object of the invention is to produce an article of jewelry in the shape of a flower having petals in which the natural colors are imitated and ornamental metallic-borders surrounding the petals.
Another object of the invention is to produce an article of jewelry, of the nature described,'in which the coloring matter can be easily and inexpensively applied to the central portion of the petal and is protected at the edges of the same.
The invention consists in certain peculiar steps in the method of manufacture to produce a novel article of jewelry, as will hereinafter be more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 represents a view of one form of the improved article of jewelry. Fig. 2 represents a cross-sectional View of one of the petals on an enlarged scale to more clearly indicate its construction.
Similar numbers of reference designate corresponding parts throughout.
This improvement is designed for floral jewelry having any form of petals, or leaves, or for the foliage of such imitations of flowers.
I11 carrying our invention into practice we stamp, or form, the petals 55 from sheetmetal, preferably slightly concaving the cen-r tral portion, and having convex-borders 6-6 surrounding this central portion. The borders are now engraved, or otherwise ornamented, to produce a rich and attractive appearance. In the drawings this border is shown to be chased to raise the ornaments 77 therefrom. We next apply to the central portion of the petals one or more coats of coloring matter 8 designed to imitate the coloring of the natural flower. This is applied with a brush to the metal and is protected by the convex-borders 6--6. An ynu mberof these petals may now be secured together to produce the imitation of the flower. The article is furnished on its obverse with a pin or other suitable securing or suspending device. By this means we are able to produceahighly artistic article of jewelry at asmall cost. The coloring matter, being of a nature adapted to be applied with'a brush, is quickly and simply laid on and the edges of the coloring are amply protected from undue wear by the border.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The method herein described for constructing articles of jewelry consisting of forming the petals from sheet-metal, next surrounding the same with an ornamental metallic-border, then grouping the petals together to form a flower, and finally applying to the central portion of the petals, coloring matter by brushing the same thereon, as described.
2. An article of jewelry of a floral nature the petals of which have colored, concave central portions surrounded by raised and ornamented metallic-borders, as described.
3. In an article of jewelry, apetal 5 having a concaved central portion, a convex metallic-border 6, the ornaments 7-7 raised from said border, and a coloring matter 8 applied to the concave portion of the petal, as and for the purpose described.
In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands.
HERMAN T. REGNELL. JAMES A. BIGNEY. CHARLES 0. SWEET.
