SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,155, dated July 11, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SYLVANUS A. NoRDYKE, of Kansas City, Wyandotte county, Kansas, have invented certain new. and useful Improvementsin Bolting-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates .to that class of milling-machinery which is designed to separate flour, meal, and similar products from the waste substances with which they are mingled as such products leave the grinding rolls or millstones, and which are likewise designed to fseparate the meal, flour, or similar pro- .ducts into their various grades or qualities;
and the object of my invention is to pro duce a bolting-machine which shall besimple,fstrong, durable and comparatively inexpensive in construction, and rapid and efiective in its operation, and which, furthermore, shall require the minimum amount of power for its effective operation, and the working parts of which shall be subjected to the minimum amount of working strains and jars.
A still further object of my invention is to produce a bolting-machine which shall be under the complete control of an attendant or operator, so thatits operation can be readily regulated as required, and the various substances be separated from the flour or meal, and the several grades or qualities of the original stock, be also readily removed from the machine as desired.
To the above purposes, my invention consists in certain peculiar and novel features of construction and arrangement, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the'accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an end elevation of a boltingmachine constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same, on the line 2-2 of Fig. 4. Fig. 3 is avertical longitudinal section of the same, on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal horizontal section of the same, on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the bolting machine, showing a modified arrangement of certain of the actuating devices. Fig. 6 is a vertical longitudinal section of a portion of the machine,'on the line 6- 6 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a detached perspective view of one of the oscillatory bolting screens. Fig. Scomprises detached views of one of the slides for the screen shaft and its guides. Fig. 9 comprises detached perspective views of modifications of the parts shown in Fig. 8. Fig. 10 is a central vertical longitudinal section of a modified form of the bolting-machine, in which a series of oscillating bolting-screens, clearers, agitators, &c. is employed. Fig.1l is a transverse vertical section of the upper part of the same, on the line 11 of Fig. 10.
Referring first to the construction illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, and 8, 1 designates the chest or casing of the bolting-machine; the said chest or casing being preferably of oblong rectangular form and of any suitable or preferred length, width, and height, as circumstances may suggest. 2 designates afeedspout or chute which is designed to lead from the usual elevator (not shown) which conveys the flouror meal from the grinding rolls or mill-stones. This chute or spout enters the topof the bolting-chest or casing 1, at one end of the same, and terminates a short distance beneath the top of the chest or casing in such manner as to properly deliver the flour or meal to the oscillating screen to be hereinafter described. In the lower part of the boltingchcst or casing 1 are located two downwardly and inwardly inclined partitions 3 which extend longitudinally of the chest or casing from one end of the same to the opposite end thereof. The upper margins of these partitions 3 are shown as inserted into rabbets in the inner sides of two strips 4. which are suitably secured horizontally upon theinner surfaces of the opposite sides of the casing or chest 1 and which extend also from one end of said chest or casing to the opposite end thereof. Upon the bottom of the chest or casingl arelocated two vertical parallel partitions 5 which extend from one end of said chest or casing to the opposite end thereof, and midway between which is also mounted vertically upon the bottom of the chest or casing 1 a third partition 6 which is parallel with the two outer parallel partitions 5 and which also extends from one end of the chest or casing l to the opposite end thereof. To the upper ICO is carried by'ahorizontal shaft 11 the ends of which protrude through the two ends of the said chest or casin g. At one end each of these shafts 11 carries agear wheel 12; these two gear-wheels inter-meshing witheach other as shown, and at its opposite end one of the shafts 11 carries a belt-pulley 13 over which runs a suitable belt 14. This belt 14 also runs over a belt-pulley 15 which is mounted upon the cor respoudingend of a countershaft 16; the said counter-shaft extending horizontally at one side of the chest or casing 1 and being jouri naled in suitable bearings 17 which are suitably secured to the corresponding side of the chest or casing 1. At its opposite or front endthe shaft 16 carries a wheel 18 the purpose of which will be hereinafter explained. Immediately above the upper margin of the middle partition 6, and at a point intermediate of the lower margins of the two inclined partitions 3, is located a horizontal rod 19 which extends from one end of chest or casing 1 to the opposite end thereof, and the ends of which are fixedly inserted into said ends of the chest or casing. Upon this rod 19 are mounted pivotally a number of deflec- 1 tors 20; the number of said deflectors corresponding to the number of the doors 8 above described. Each of these deflectors is com posed of a bottom portion of rectangular form andof a width corresponding to the distance between the upper margin of the central partition 6 and the lower margin of one of the inclined partitions 3 and each of said deflectors is provided with two upwardly extending triangular end-pieces through the apices of which extends the rod 19. It will thus be seen that by moving one or more of the deflectors 20 so as to close the corresponding portion of the space between one of the inclined partitions 3 and the middle partition 6, the corresponding part of the space between the middle partition 6 and the opposite inclined partition 3 will be left open, for a purpose to be hereinafter explained. In order to afford the required access to the lower part of the chest or casing 1, for the purpose of opening and closing the doors 8 and for tilting the deflectors 20, as described, each side of the chest or casing 1 is provided at its lower margin with a horizontal longitudinally extending door 21 which is secured at its upper margin, by suitable hinges 22 to the lower margin of the side of the chest or casin g and each of which doors is provided with any numberof suitable knobs or handles 23; the said doors being each preferably of such length as to extend from one end of the chest or casing to the opposite end thereof. Thus it will be seen that by opening one of the doors 21, the operator or attendant can reach into the chest or casing and open one or more of the doors 8, and then tilt one or more of the deflectors 20, as desired.
In Figs. 2, 3, 4, 6, and 7, 24 designates the f-rameof the oscillating bolting-screen; the said frame being approximately of oblong rectangular form, and of somewhat less length and width than the internal length and width of the chest or casing 1. The upper parts of the two opposite sides and also the front or receiving end of the screen-frame 24 are provided with vertically extending strips 25 which serve to partially retain thefiour or meal upon the meshing of the screen during the oscillationsof the screen-frame; the rear or discharge end of the screen-frame 24 is left open so as to permit the bolted flour ormeal to escape readily at said discharge end ofthe screen-frame, as hereinafter more fully explained. Upon the upper side of the screenframe 24 is secured the screen proper 26 of wire cloth or other suitable foraminous material, and the said screen-frame is supported within bolting-chest or casing 1 so as to incline longitudinally from its receiving end downward to its discharge end, as shown. The screen-frame 24 is thus supported in the chest or casing 1 bymeans of two short stubaxles 27 the inner end of each of which is flattened and secured beneath a cross-piece 28 of thescreen-frame 24 by means of suitable bolts 29, or equivalent means. Theflattened inner end of each shaft 27 is formedon its upper side with an upwardly extending flange 30 which abuts against the end of the screen-frame 24 and through which pass any suitable or preferred number of bolts or screws 31, or equivalent means for also securing the inner end of the shaft in position upon the screen-frame. Each of these stub-shafts 27 extends through a vertical opening-or slot 32 in the end of the chest or casing 1; there being thus two of said slots or openings 32 one being located in-the upper part of each end of the chest or casing. The outer extremity of each stub-shaft 27 is inserted into a transverse opening 33in the upper or body portion of a slide 34 there being two of said slides each of which is located upon the upper part of the outer surface-of each end of the chest or casing 1. Each of these slides 34 is of approximately elongated rectangular form and at opposite vertical sides of said slide it is formed with two lateral flanges 35. These flanges are confined beneath two guides 36 each of which is of approximately Z-form in 'cross section, and which is screwed or otherwise suitably secured in vertical position upon the outer surface of the ends of the chest or casing 1, as shown at 37; it being understood that there is one of the slides 34 at each end of the chest or casing 1, and that each slide is provided with two oppositely disposed guides 36. As shown in Figs. 1, 3,
l the front end of the front stub-shaft'27 carries a mutilated gearwheel 38 the teeth of which are upon the lower margin of the wheel only; a suitable washer 39 surrounding the outer portion of the said stub-shaft and being interposed between the outer surface of the slide 34 and the inner side of the wheel. From the front end of the chest or casing 1 extends horizontally outward a stub-shaft 40 which is preferably surrounded by a sleeve 4 1,and upon the outer end of this stub-shaft 40 is mounted an upwardly extending segment-arm 42; the said arm 42 being arranged to oscillate or vibrate upon the shaft 40 and being retained upon said stub-shaft by a nut 43 or an equivalent device. At its upper end the segment-arm 42 carries a segmental rack 44 the teeth of which mesh with the teeth of the mutilated gear-wheel 38'. The
upper part of this segment-arm 42 is provided with a longitudinal slot or elongated opening 45 through which works adjustably a wristpin or bolt 46. This Wrist-pin or bolt also extends transversely through the inner end of a connecting rod 47. Through the outer end of this connecting rod 47 passes a. second wrist-pin or bolt 48 which is also set adj ustably in an elongated longitudinal opening or slot 49 which is formed in one of the spokes of the wheel 18 before described. Beneath the oscillating screen-frame 24is located a horizontal shaft 50 which extends longitudinally of the chest or casing 1 and the ends of which are journaled in brackets 50 secured to the inner sides of the said ends of the chest. The extremities of this shaft 50 protrude 1 through and beyond the ends of the chest or casing 1, and at each end said shaft carries a ratchet-wheel 51 the teeth of which work in a recess 52 in the lower part of each slide 34 and said teeth engage a roller 53 which is mounted upon a short axle 54 extending transversely and horizontally in the lower part of each slide 34. The ends of the shaft 50 also work through a vertically elongated opening or slot 55 in a pendent extension 56 of each slide 34. At its rear extremity the shaft 50 carries a belt-pulley 56 over which runs a belt 57 which also runs over a second pulley 58 on the shaft 16 before referred to. This shaft 16 is the main-power shaft of -the machine and is provided at its rear end with a fast pulley 59 and a loose pulley 60; a suitable belt (not shown) running over said fast and loose pulleys and over a pulley upon a line shaft, or over a belt-wheel upon a suitable motor, as the case may be. At'a point about midway of the length of the shaft 50 is mounted a circular wavered cam-disk 61 the hub 62 of which is secured to the'shaft so as to turn therewith by means of a set bolt 63v or equivalent means. Beneath the foraminous screen proper 26 is mounted a clearer which consists of a number of inverted-V- shaped bars 64which extend parallel with each other in a direction transversely of the screen-frame24. These clearer bars 64 are connected together by cross bars 65 which extend in a direction longitudinally of the screenframe, and these bars 65 in turn rest and move upon a suitable number of transverse bars 66 which are suitably secured to the under side of the screen-frame 24. To the under side of the middle bar 65, at a point midway of the length of said bar, is secured, by
suitable bolts 68, a supporting plate 67 and upon the lower ends of the bolts 68 are mounted two anti-friction rollers 69. The wavered cam-disk 61 works marginally between the two rollers 69, and it will be seen that as the shaft 50 is rotated, the wavered cam-disk 61 will throw the clearerbars 64 alternately toward the front and rear:ends of the chestor casing 1. As the upper edges of these clearer bars are in constant contact with the under surface of the foraminous screen26 the de scribed movements of the clearer bars 64 prevent the screen from becoming clogged with waste or refuse material. 'In order to prevent the flour, meal, or other product from escaping from the sides of the screen 26, as the latter oscillates laterally, to the two sides and the receiving or upper end of the screen is secured the lower margin of a flexible guard 70 of canvas or other impervious material, the upper margin of which is secured to the inner surfaces of the sides and front end of the chest or casing 1. It will thus be seen that as the screen-frame 24 oscillates alternately from side to side,' as indicated in dotted lines inFigs. 2 and 11, a small portion of the flour, meal, or other product will be tossed alternately upon the side portions of the flexible guard 70 but will not be allowed to escape and fall below the screen, It .will also be seen that the end portion of the guard 70 prevents any of the flour, meal, or other product from passing the receiving end of the screen-frame as said product leaves the spout or chute 2.
As before stated, the shaft'l6 is the mainpowershaft of the machine, andthe power received by said shaft is transmitted by the belt 57 to the shaft 50 to produce its rotation and the consequent reciprocation of the clearers, while the belt 14 transmits motion to the conveyer-shafts 11 and consequently actuates the conveyers 12. As the shaft 50 rotates, the teeth of the ratchet wheels 51 strike the rollers 53 and consequently successively raise the screen and alternately allow the same to drop, thus jolting or agitating the flour, meal, orother product as it is passing In Figs. 5, 6 and 9 I have shown a modified arrangement of operative connections for actuating the slides and screens vertically and also for regulating the drop or jolt of the screen. In this instance, the slides have nopendent extensions 56 and the rollers project horizontally fromthe outer sides of the" slides and are engaged by the teeth of the ratchet wheels 51 substantially as before. The adjusting or regulating screws 71 are here dispensed with, and in lieu thereof a lever 73 is employed in connection with each slide 3 1. Each of these levers 73 is pivoted at one end, as at 74:, upon the corresponding end of the chest or casing 1, and extends transversely beneath the corresponding slide 34:. To the opposite end of each lever 73 is pivotally connected the lower end of a rod 75 which extends upwardly, and the upper end of which passes through the upper horizontal arm of an inverted L-shaped bracket 76 which is bolted or otherwise suitably secured to the top of the chest or casing 1. The upper extremity of each of these rods 75 is externally screw-threaded to receive an adj Listing-wheel 77 the hub of which is internally screw-threaded to work upon the upper end of the rod 75. It will thus be seen that, by turning the adjusting wheel 77 in one or the opposite direction, the lever 73 will be raised or lowered, and consequently (as the slides in dropping strike the upper sides of the levers 73) the jolting action will be varied as desired. In this instance also a wheel 79 which corresponds in function with the wheel 18 previously described, is mounted upon one end of a shaft 78 which is located horizontally upon the top of the machine, and the ends of which are journaled in bearings 80 which are mounted upon the top of the chest or casing 1, preferably at the ends thereof. One spoke of the wheel is provided with a longitudinal slot 81 corresponding to the slot 19 of said wheel 18, and in. this slot works an adjustable wrist-pin or bolt 82 which passes through the upper end of a connecting-rod 83. The lower end of this connecting rod carries awrist-pin or bolt 8 1 which works adj ustably in a longitudinal slot in an arm 86 which extends radially from the outer end of the corresponding stub-shaft 27. Thus it will be seen that, as the wheels 79 rotate, the arms 86 will be vibrated radially and that the described laterally oscillating movements of the screen will be produced, as before.
In Figs. 10 and 11, I have shown a boltingmachine having a number of laterally oscillating screens, clearers, and other operative connectionsembodying the essential features of my invention. Inthis instance, as alsoin the modified construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6 above described, parts which are like corresponding parts in the preceding construction first above described are designated by similar numerals of reference. In this instance, two of the Ulaterally reciprocating screens are shown as mounted the one above the other in the casing 1, each of said screens having a clearer similar to that above described, and the oscillating and vertically agitating or jolting connections of the upper screen being precisely similar to those shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 4c. The slides 34 of the lower screen, in this instance, however, have no pendent extensions 56 as before, but upon the upperend of each of the adjusting screws 71 rests. the lower end of a block 79 which-is separate from the slides 34; each of said blocks having an elongated. vertical opening or slot 8O to receive the corresponding end of the shaft 50, and corresponding with the slot 55 of the pendent extension 56 above described. It will thus be seen that in this instance, the upper ends of the screws 71 are relieved of the direct blows of the descending slides 34, and that said blows are borne by the upper ends of the blocks 7 9. Immediately beneath the upper screen-frame is mounted a partition 81 which inclines downwardly from the rear end of the chest or casing 1 toward the front end of the same;.said partition being supported upon similarly inclined ribs or cleats 82 secured to the opposite sides of the chest or casing 1. The lower end of this partition approaches closely to the innerend of an outlet spout 83 which spout projects from the front end of the chest or casing 1; the arrangement being such that the bolted flour or meal from the upper sieve shall at times flow from the partition 81 outward through the spout 83. Immediately below the lower screen is mounted a second partition 84 which is supported upon side strips or cleats 85 said parts corresponding in construction and position with the partition 81 and strips or cleats 82. The lower end of the lower partition 841 communicates with the inner end of a lower outlet spout 86"; said spout projecting outwardly from the lower part of the front end of the chest or casing l, and the arrangement being such that the bolted flour or meal shall fall upon the partition 84; and shall be discharged out of the machine through the spent 86. Between the lower end of the upper partition 81, and the inner end of the upper outletspout 83 is mounted a cut off valve or gate 87. This cut off valve or gate is located j ust below the lower end of the partition 81 and is of approximately V-form in cross-section; said valve or gate extending horizontally from one side of the chest or casing l to the opposite side of i the same. This cut-01f valve or gate is mounted upon a horizontal rock-shaft 88 which extends transversely of the chest or casing 1, and theends of the rock shaft extend through and turn in the sides of the chest or casing. One endor each end'of this rockshaft is provided with a suitable crankarm (not shown), and it will be seen that by turning the rock shaft rearwardly the upper part of the cut-off 87 will extend inwardly as shown in solid lines in Fig. 10; thus allowing the bolted flour or meal to flow over the upper part of the cut-off and escape-from the machine through the spout 83. By turning the crankshaft forward, the upper part of the cut-off is closed against the inner end of the spout 83, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 10, while the lower part of the cut-0E extends inwardly and downwardly as also shown in dotted lines in said figure. It will thus be seen that when the cut-off is in this closed position, the flour or meal flowing from the lower end of the partition 81 strikes the inner surfaceof the cut-off and is deflected thereby upon the upper end of the lower screen and is thus again bolted when desired. It is to be understood that while I have shown but two of the screens in Figs. 10 and 11, any desired greater number of said screens may be employed; said screens being disposed one below another, and the partitions 81 being duplicated accordingly, in such event the cutoffs 87 and spouts 83 being accordingly duplicated. It is to be further understood, that the form of slides and separate blocks shown as applied to the lower screen in Figs. 10 and 11, may be applied to all of the screens, and that vice versa the forms of slides and extension blocks, and the agitating and oscillating gearing employed in the other figures of the drawings may be applied to the arrangement of screens shown in Figs. 10.
and 11.
- In order to properly separate the waste or impurities of various kinds from the bolted flour or meal, and to properly discharge the waste or impurities from the m achine,I have provided all of the machines shown in the drawings with the following attachments: 88 designates a trough which extends obliquely beneath the screen frame 24, at such a distance below said frame as in no way to interfere with its lateral oscillations. This trough extends transversely of that end of the chest or casing which is adjacent to the lower end of the screen-frame, and also extends through openings 89 in the oblique partitions. The lower end of this trough communicates with a dischargespout 90 which projects laterally from one side of the chest or casing 1. To the inner side of the trough 88 is secured the lower margin of a flexible shield 91 of canvas or other flexible and at the same time impervious material; the upper margin of said shield being secured to the inner margin of the lower cross-piece of the screen frame. The shaft 50 passes through this shield, and the said shield is of such length as to permit the required free lateral oscillation of the screenframe. In the arrangement shown iniFigs. 10 and 11, there are two of these troughs and shields, and there are to be more, if the number of screens be increased, and in either in- Waste, flow over the lower end of the screen and fall into the trough from which they are discharged from the machine without in any way mingling with the bolted flour or meal.
From the above description, it will be seen that I have produced a boltin g-machine which is simple, strong, durable, and comparatively inexpensive in construction, and rapid and effective in its operation, and the working parts of which are subjected to the minimum amount of working strains and jars; also that I'have produced a bolting-machine which is completely under the control of an attendant or operator, so that its operation can be readily regulated as required, and one in which the various substances separated from the flour or meal, as well as the several grades or qualities of the original stock, can be readily removed from the machine, as desired.

l. A bolting-machine, comprisingasuitable chest or casing, and a flat bolting-screen having lateral or sidewise reciprocation or rocking motion in the chest or casing and also simultaneous vertical reciprocation .therein, substantially as set forth.

Abolting-machine,comprisingasuitable chest or casing and a flat bolting-screen having lateral or sidewise reciprocation or rocking movement in the chest or casing and simultaneous vertical reciprocation therein, and a clearer-frame carried by the boltingscreen and mounted beneath the same, and also movable longitudinally thereof and constantly therewith, substantially as set forth.
3. A bolting-machine, comprising a suitable chest or casing a laterally oscillatory boltingscreen mounted therein, a longitudinally movable clearer frame carried by the screenframe, a revoluble shaft journaled inthe chest or casing beneath the screen-frame and clearer-frame, and a wavered cam-disc carried by said shaft and engaging the said clearerframe to produce its longitudinal movements, substantially as set forth.
4. 'A bolting machine, comprising a suitable chest or casing, a-flat, and only laterally oscillating screen mounted therein, and a flexible guard secured to the uppersides and one end of the screen frame, and also to the sides and one end of the chest or casing, said guard being of such length as to permit the full movement of the screen,in combination with -a flexible guard secured to the under side of chest or casing, a laterally oscillatory screen mounted therein, a power-shaft journaled upon the frame and carrying a radially slotted wheel, and a connecting rod attached adjustably at one end to the wheel and adjustably connected at its opposite end to the screen shaft, substantially as set forth.
6. Abolting-machine, comprising a suitable chest or casing, a laterally oscillatory screen mounted therein a vertically movable slide located at each end of the chest or casing and supporting each end of the screen, a revoluble shaft journaled in said chest or casing and carrying at each end a ratchet-wheel engagmg the lower end of each slide, and a powershaft carrying a wheel operatively connected to the slide, substantially as set forth.
7. Abolting-machine,comprisinga suitable chest or casing, a laterally oscillatory screen, a slide mounted at each end of the chest or casing, a revoluble shaft journaled in said chest and carrying at each end a ratchetwheel, engaging the lower end of the slide, and an adjusting or regulating-screw also mounted at each end of the chest or casing and beneath each of the slides, and operating to limit the downward movement of each slide, substantially as set forth.
