NATHAN SI-IFILL, OF BEASON, ILLINOIS.
EN D-GATEV FOR WAGONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 500,038, dated J' une 20, 1.893.
Application filed March 16, 1893. Serial No. 46 6,369. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN SHELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Beason, in the county of Logan and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gates for Wagons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in end gates for wagons; and it consists in providing an end gate with end vertical battens and a centralvertical batten through which passes the rod which pivots the end gate to the wagon body, the central batten also supporting a spring bar which engages with the upper ends of latches and projects them into recesses formed in the wagon body, as' will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view showing an end gate with my improvements attached, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the end gate raised.`
The wagon body is of ordinary construction, and to the same is pivotally secured the end gate A, which end gate is provided with end battens ot a and a central batten a', the upper end portions of these battens being apertured for the passage of the pivot rod a2, said rod having at one end a looped handle for convenience in withdrawing the same when it is desired to entirely remove the end gate.
B B designate sliding latchesor bolts, which are provided with outwardly projecting handles and slide within loops c c secured to the end gate. The upper ends of the bolts are formed with eyes or perforations with which engage the ends of a spring bar D, said bar being held upon the end gate by being passed through an aperture in the central hatten so as to extend an equal distance on each side of said batten, and this spring bar actuates rlhe rear end of the floor of the wagon body is provided with inclined recesses which termi nate in depressions in which the lower ends of the bolts lie.
In operation, when the end gate is lowered the spring actuated bolts carried thereby will automatically engage with the wagon body and hold the gate firmly closed, and it can be readily opened or swung upon its pivot by withdrawing the bolts. .The latchesor bolts being near each end of the gate will prevent it warping. The device is cheap, simple and durable.
I am aware that prior to my invention it has been proposed to pivot an end gate to a wagon body by a transverse rod; also that it is not new to provide such an end gate with lever catches which engage with the side boards of the wagon body, and that it is also old to provide a swinging end gate with a central spring actuated catch, and I do not claim such construction broadly; but
What I do'claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In combination with an end gate which is adapted to be pivotally secured to the side boards of the wagon body, of a central vertical hatten and vertically moving latches or bolts located near the side edges of the gate, and a spring bar passed through the central batten so as to extend on each side of the same and connected at its ends with the latches or bolts, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In an end gate for wagon bodies, the combination, of the end battens and a central vertical batten apertured near their upper ends for the passage of a rod which pivots the end gate to the wagon body, movable bolts or latches located near the sides of the end gate in bails or loops as shown, said bolts or latches having outwardly projecting handles, a spring bar, D, secured to the central batten to extend an equal distance on each side ot the saine, the ends of the bar being held in engagement with the upper ends of In testimony whereof Iaflix my signature inA the sliding `bolts or latches, the -endof the presence of `two witnesses.
wagon body in lrhe path of the bolts having NATHAN SHELL inclined recesses terminating in depressions 5 into which the ends of the bolts pass, sub-4 Witnesses:
stantially as shown and for` the purpose set I-I. SHERMAN,
forth. L. OGLE.
